Que Tal Hostel e Arte

Sao Paulo, Brazil

It's minutes away from 2 metro lines, has a great staff, and it's the cleanest hostel I've ever been to. The breakfast is average and the shower runs warm not hot. They host events they don't really tell you about which you may enjoy if you're not shy and fluent in portuguese. First night they had a singer do an intimate performance, great, but next night there was a hipster party full of the staff's friends with no warning so trying to cook dinner and shower during that was not fun.

El Misti House

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

It's walking distance to a metro line and Copacabana beach as well as a super market and food. The staff is friendly and helpful., the internet is fast though only accessible from the main floor. The layout is a bit of a pain since there are like 5 floors and the rooms are small and pretty packed with triple level bunk beds but everyone follows the noise rules and the breakfast is varied and delicious.

Lapa Astral Hostel

They should clearly advertise this as a party hostel for being in the middle of the Lapa craziness. Cant say I enjoyed not sleeping for 3 days and I don´t understand why the hostel played club level music starting at 7 when people were just trying to chill and talk; my friends and I had to scream to be heard. Other than that: it had a sad breakfast, see through bathroom stalls w/broken doors, relatively hot showers, fast wifi, and didn´t overcharge for the World Cup.

The staff is very friendly and helpful and even in the midst of all the World Cup frenzy the hostel was pretty quiet. The location is a problem if you want to walk everywhere because nothing is close but there is a metro and several bus stops really close that can quickly take you anywhere in Rio.
