Great hostel located on a different island to the main tourist attractions. You do have to use the waterbus which is an experience in itself but does provide great views of San Marco's from the sea. It's only about ten minutes away by regular waterbus from San Marco too so it's quite convenient. We stayed in a 16 bed room but with partitions so it allowed privacy and the beds were also equipped with individual lights and plugs.

Students Residence

Student accommodation with individual twin rooms in a three bedroom student flat. Clean and with good shower/toilet facilities. Close to the centre, only a five minute walk to good restaurants and bars. The staff were also very friendly and helpful with a 24 hour reception and lots of information available.

Comfortable, clean rooms with air conditioning. Just a shame about the toilets and showers. There's only four bathrooms in the hostel and they appear to not be cleaned very regularly. The location is very convenient and close to the silver gate of Diocletian's Palace into the old town. The staff are also very friendly and helpful. So it's a great place as long as you're not squeamish!

The Aquarium Youth Hostel

Possibly the worst hostel of our three week trip. Yes, it's cheap but the showers and toilets are in such poor condition and are so dirty that you leave craving a proper wash! The rooms are acceptable with bunk beds and seemingly clean sheets. The hostel workers are quite strict on security and lockers are available. Unfortunately the attendant warned us to always lock up or "the gypsies will be in to steal your things". It's close to the train station but not a place you want to be at night.

Recommended in the Rough Guide to Europe and conveniently placed five minutes away from the old town. The bathroom and toilets are clean. We stayed in an eight person room but owing to the partitions it was quite comfortable and relatively private.

Alibi Hostel

Temporary hostel in student accommodation. Three people per room with an ensuite which was clean and modern. It's not very close to the centre meaning public transport is a must. It's about twenty minutes from the major sights such as the Hofburg so not too far out of the way.

Slightly bizarre sleeping on a mattress in a classroom but it's more comfortable than it sounds! We were in a room with eight people which was fine and the toilets/shower facilities were better than in some of the full time hostels we were in. Central location too, very close to Charles Bridge meant that it was so convenient for seeing the castle and the old town square.

Generator Berlin Mitte

Great hostel. We stayed in a four person room with an ensuite. The room and bathroom was clean with modern appliances. The beds were also equipped with a small personal light and plug, handy for charging phones/iPods. It was a little noisy at night owing to the area and the hostel's bar (really reasonably priced drinks) but it wasn't too loud to sleep. We also used the Generator Venice hostel on the basis of how good it was in Berlin which we would also recommend!
