We were a group of 11 in a four-bed, six-bed and a private room. We had no major issues with any one of them (although the odd toilet seat was unattatched). The rooms had aircon and although the 4-bed was a little small, it had everything you needed just to sleep for the night. We had the added benefit of filling the whole room so we didnt need to worry about our stuff being out. The roof top bar had the most amazing view and the location was perfect. Would 100% stay here again.

Stayed in one of the newly furnished dorms so it was lovely. The hostel is very small but with a welcoming atmosphere. Had a weird experience with a staff member - grabbed money out of my hand because I was being too slow in paying for a bottle of water, and she wanted to get back to her beer pong game. Overall a nice stay, however I would probably look into a hostel on the other side of town if I were to return.

Stayed in the 32 bed dorm which didn't even have a lock system, so aside from the things stored in your personal locker, everything could be accessed by locals. Aside from this I had the most amazing time and would say it was one of the top hostels I've ever stayed at! Awesome pool and two bars, plus a 24hr restaurant that served fantastic food for when the cravings hit. Will definitely be back!
Hi, thanks for choosing to stay at Funky Flashpacker! There is no need to be concerned about security at Funky, we have a security guard on duty 24-hrs a day and CCTV cameras all around the premises that also operate 24-hrs a day! We find that providing a secure place for each of our guests to store their belongings is more efficient than handing out 32-keys for the dorm room door. We are so thrilled to hear that you rate us as one of the top hostels you’ve ever stayed at! We’re happy that you made the most of our 24-hr Sky Bar and kitchen, where we serve delicious and great value food and drinks right around the clock! Happy travels! #TeamFunky

Rooftop bar is more of a top floor bar as there was no access outside due to noise complaints. Beds were spacious and very comfy! Went on a night out with the hostel and while contemplating walking home was told I was very safe to do so - ended up being followed and had to run into a nearby establishment to ask for help. Bad experience, not necessarily because of the hostel, but I did not feel safe in the area. Would recommend for groups but not solo travellers.

Loved it! Was very quiet on arrival but at night the atmosphere was great - the rooftop bar and pool was to die for. Great place, would definitely stay again.
Thanks for the great review and so pleased you enjoyed yourself. All the best, Rob and the HCM team

Lovely set up with a pool at the back and onsite bar. However the house spirits were questionable as I was incredibly ill immediately after each mixer/shot purchased (took me 3 or 4 drinks to learn my lesson) - so stay clear of those. Very lively at night, but no organisation nor events meant that it was a little difficult to meet new people. Beds were the squeakiest I've ever come across. Overall quite a nice place, but next time I would probably try somewhere different.

Lovely place! Booked here because we needed a few nights rest after a crazy week. There was a problem with our room due to a previous guest overstaying because of illness, and they were incredibly helpful booking us a room at their sister hotel as well as paying for our transport there. The same price as a hostel (for two people) yet a private luxury room! Not the place to meet new people, but for quiet nights I would highly recommend!

Excellent hostel with an amazing atmosphere. Would be great for groups as well as solo travellers; you're bound to make new friends. Would also thoroughly recommend the castaways trip, but make sure to keep a close eye on your valuables!
Hey thanks for the ace review, It's so pleasing to hear you had such a good time whilst staying with us. The staff all work super hard to make sure that everyone has the best time ever so I will pass your great review on to the staff. We wish you the best future travels, Rob Towell Manager

Recommended by a friend because it was very close to the night life, however not a hub itself so you could be sure of a quiet night. For the price it's a dream, however for solo travellers its definitely a no go, since there is no atmosphere whatsoever (unless you are happy to attend other hostel social nights). One downside is that the showers are in the actual bedroom, so there's no way of not being a bother when needing to shower/go to the toilet at night. Overall a nice comfortable place.

From the very start the staff were extremely welcoming. From the receptionists to the cleaners they were all very accommodating and kind. I took part in a surf lesson and really enjoyed myself! The facilities were very good and there was a lovely social vibe to the place. overall I thoroughly enjoyed my stay! Would recommend highly.

It's well located at the heart of Surfers Paradise. The rooms are clean and the facilities are great - free laundry! Not being allowed to wear shoes/flipflops sounds reasonable until you have to cook in the kitchen or use the bathroom, then it just feels a bit disgusting. Other than that, a very nice hostel.

Renting plates/cutlery is extremely annoying. Apparently it's to keep the kitchen clean, but that can't be the case since the kitchen was filthy. The hostel is well located but it is a maze in itself. I found it a challenge just finding my way around. The bar is nice enough, and the rooms were clean. However with no hooks at all in the communal bathroom, you have to travel in between showering wearing just a towel. I was disappointed, but you could probably do worse.

The two kitchens had almost no pots of a reasonable size. This meant that you had to wait for others to finish their meals to cook your own, and often no one washed up so you were left washing up other people's pots just to eat. It was rather disgusting. Everything else was pretty average. The toilets could do with an upgrade. If you're a solo traveller it's difficult to meet others, as there's nothing organised and no real social area, only the communal benches where people simply eat and leave

It may be the most expensive hostel I've ever stayed at, but the atmosphere and homely feel makes the money spent well worth it. Instead of being in a big multi-storey chain hostel, this place has a family household environment and you'll never spend an evening feeling lonely. A dream come true for the solo traveller. Free tea all day long, perfect for travelling Britons like me!

We loved our stay here in Rotorua. Instead of squeaky bunks we slept on comfy single beds in a room that felt half like home. There was enough space for everyone and you had individual plug sockets and a mini table/shelf each. The facilities were very good as well, with lots of hot showers and toilets, and a fully equipped kitchen. Would stay again!

Our 8 bed dorm should have really been a 6 bed, there was absolutely no space for our stuff. The bathrooms and showers were flawless, with many cubicles and hot water. The kitchen was well equipped too, just for the vastness of the hostel, didn't have enough space. Free wifi in the shop next door. If you're out to meet people, I'd suggest a slightly smaller hostel. Overall a fairly decent stay.

I booked just for 1 night, but ended up staying longer as I really enjoyed my stay. The location is great, close to everything worth seeing and the staff were awesome. The facilities were good, loads of bathrooms but unfortunately the top terrace couldn't be used as they were doing some maintenance. Overall a good stay! Can't fault it!
