Anne Hostel Asakusabashi, Tokyo, Japan

21st Dec 2018

I was excited to come to the Anne hostel. On my way up the stairs, I noticed a smell of body odor. Reception was right next to a loud and rambunctious common room. My Japanese style room was just down the hall. The walls were paper thin, and the room lacked the natural light and openness of the pictures. I slept in the middle, 1 meter away from two other people. The futon was comfy enough, but I didn’t feel comfortable and shortened my stay. They kindly refunded (most of) my money.

The bloke wearing a Make America Great Again cap in the common room was somewhat off-putting, but I had a nice conversation with one of my roomates. The bed wasn't terribly comfortable (though the duvet did help the spirits). The location was in the middle of an interesting part of town, but if you're hoping to spend all of your time on the National Mall or in Georgetown, there are closer places (but it wouldn't help you go to as many interesting places)

My second time there. Not the best place to meet people to go out with at night, but a great place to have some R&R. (You also get Erasmus students from the university down the street, so you could go out with them, but they are quiet because they have classes). There's also cheap food (targeting university students and immigrants) nearby. And you do have to take the metro into the center city, but it's fast and easy. Staff also seems to be onsite and rather flexible, if not the most sociable.

The bed pod things are cool, but they could present a situation where you are trying to sleep, but since you have the curtain closed your roommates do not realize it and make lots of noise (note that the curtain does not block out noise). And the reception was busy (the place is gigantic), but was nice enough to let me go back and fetch my forgotten towel.

Thank you for sharing you experience with us! sorry that your roommates weren't as considerate as they could be during your stay! We can provide you free earplugs as well to help with the noise in dorms! We hope to see you again soon! St Christopher's Inn GDN

It's obnoxious that the patio closes at 10p to keep the noise down, and even people that are sitting there quietly on their laptops (to avoid waking their roommates and avoid the somewhat depressing lobby) are rudely evicted. But oh well. At least there was an outlet and wifi outside. On the bright side, I met some very interesting and friendly people there. My room also had an ensuite bathroom and shower (though it is true that there is a shower whose door opens to the patio).

Fine place. When I arrived, I was a little perplexed that it had a 95% rating given the rather unfriendly and unhelpful reception. But, I wound up having a nice conversation with a mother from Munich, and the receptionist that was there when I came to retrieve my bags was a complete joy to talk to.

Nice place, great vegetarian-friendly neighborhood. The staff varied from great and easy to talk with to great but a little too excited and sarcastic to actually be good to talk to (note: I'm a very sarcastic person in myself.. but maybe I just wasn't feeling sarcastic for those 4 days. Who knows.).

Good morning, it is a bit hard to answer your comment, maybe just 2 sarcastic people met together and both did not have good day. We ask for apology, as we should, of course bring a bad mood with the hostel. We say in Germany" a louse on the liver-run" We hope to welcome you again and perhaps we have our improvisation theater, so these are the actors in this time responsible for the sarcasm - 26.5.,22.9. and 24.11.2015. We wish you great summer Art-Hostel Berlin City Team

A pretty dull place to exist, but if you're getting enough stimulation from the city it's a fine place to sleep. I know hostels can't control the roommates, but I had a very unpleasantly awkward "conversation" with a rather drunk and old German roommate.

Most of the people there are like family to each other, and are happy to welcome you in (the others are only great). Plus the staff are knowledgable and are willing to share with you great tips on Rotterdam and other cities. Make sure you try some peanut butter and sprinkles at breakfast...

This would be a great place to meet people (the people are willing to chat and the environment is conducive to it), but I didn't really click with anyone (perhaps this is my fault for staying in a large tourist city during the week of Easter holiday). On the other hand, they had cool design magazines to read and the full-time live-in staff were pretty cool. Overall, it was a bit pricy but had the potential to be mind blowing.

They had really cool stuff on the walls in the common room and GREAT wifi, but no one in the common room (or kitchen) really talked with each other and the staff didn't do much to encourage conversation. Also, 5/6 roommates were in the same party and were very loud when they came back at 5am. I know there is not much the hostel can do about this, but it was very annoying. On the other hand, there was a really cool receptionist from DC, and I wish we could have talked more.

Best hostel I've ever been to. Staff goes out of their way to make everyone feel welcome by breaking the ice and getting guests into a conversation in a non-pushy way, making it felt like a home. Over the week I stayed I met several interesting people (guy coming back from trip to Africa, PhD taking time off to learn languages, friendly Romanian people, etc). It would be nice if they upgraded the bathroom, but it works out if you spend more time enjoying new friends than you do in the shower :)

Gigantic hostel. It felt like college kids come here to get drunk, but there were a number of other people traveling for more interesting reasons and my roommates were all chill. But still, not a very great place to meet people for a non-partying single traveller because there are not really any informal places besides the room to meet others. Also, the wifi hardly worked (lobby and room, Mac and iPhone).

Only stayed one night but had an interesting chat with my marine engineer roommate and a random French guy traveling to Japan without using a plane. It was hard to find both reception and the room (which are not in the same building). I was there during the week in the off season, and there were only those 2 other guests (though that's not really surprising). Good wifi.

InToulouse is a very calm place. I was in a triple and had 2 roommates; they were both my age and doing a semester abroad at the university that is across the street, but had not yet found more permanent accommodations. One was a brit, and the other was from like Sweden. Rooms were clean and the train station is closer than it looks. Lots of cheap restaurants up the stairs from the train station (just look around).
