Kyoto Hana Hostel, Kyoto, Japan
9.1
29th Jul 2015

Hana is very centrally located, 5min walk to Central Kyoto station where a lot of buses depart from and take you to all the sights around Kyoto. There is 2 malls nearby, as well as McDonalds and Starbucks,if that's your thing. The staff is very friendly and they have informatoon hanging everywhere about activities, weather, tips from other guests in a nice notebook. The common area is big, with couch, guitar, ukulele, games,tv and allows you to be social, which we didnt find often in Japan.

Ishi is a very hospitable man, we drank sake together and it was very valuable to have a local explaining us a lot of japanese language or customs, which is usually hard to get as most hostel owners do not speak a lot of english in our experience. He even created a shaved ice desert so that we could try! The tatami room we stayed on was very very hot, only with a fan was still hot but we spent most of the time out. They have craft classes available and are set in a very quiet area!

Thank you for staying with us. We too enjoyed talking with you guys. I'm sorry about the room. This house is Japanese traditional house so we don't use AC but now Ice pillows are available for guests to stay more comfortable and cooler! We hope to see you again.

This hostel is located in the pretiest area of Kyoto! The small streets, almost no cars, an occasional geisha passing through, the lanterns lit at night.. It is wonderful! There are convenience stores and restaurants a 5 min walk away and the Gion area for bars and restaurants is also walkable from here, 15 min. The riverside is also beautiful to walk at sunset. The staff doesnt speak english but we understood each other. There is a kitchen +washing machine you can use.

Villa Sandra Guesthouse, Malapascua Island Cebu, Philippines
7.1
3rd Jul 2015

Location Villa Sandra is very centrally located in Logon, which means not directly on the beach (which is a good thing, when the waves are huge you dont want to be that near them!). Staff Jun Jun the owner is very proud of his space and takes good care of his guests, there were a lot of returning guests who felt like friends to Jun Jun. One night he even cooked for everyone, which was very nice. Security The door is always open but there is always staff around. Great atmosphere!

Great location, central but quiet at night. The outside lounge area with big sofas, swing and tables is a big plusplus and we could organize our cooking school course and Muai Thai show at reception. Coffee, tea and toast (jam/butter) is available. The front gate is closed at 20h and you need the key to get in,really safe. Lots of toilets and showers, which were really clean! Would stay again! Only the people staying didnt interact much.

U-Baan Guesthouse, Bangkok, Thailand

Joy's hostel felt more like being at a friends place! She is so welcoming and easy going that you feel right at home! Plus she knows everything there is to know about Bangkok: where to eat, shop, which museums, which stop and how much the ticket costs! I would love if Joy had a chain of hostels all around the world! Additionally,as this is her home, she takes really good care of it,all rooms+WC are cleaned everyday. The lounge area on the hallway is the best to meet other travellers or relax!

I would definitely stay here again! Our room was beautiful, the bathroom, kicthen and lounge area as well! Design bits everywhere, concrete and brick walls combined with beautiful fourniture -what's not to like? Free breakfast and good WiFi,I want to go back! Breakfast starts at 7am,so you have time to enjoy breakfast even if leaving on the 8am ferry to Langkawi- like we did. Location is near lots of bars but tucked away so not so loud. Really cool hostel!

We stayed in one of the rooms which faced the street and we could ear a lot of noise from the street (late evening and morning). There was AC but it was only on from 20pm-08am - and really cold.Otherwise there were fans to cool off the hot air of KL. Breakfast was simple but good. The owner is very nice and made no objections when we decided to stay another night or when we asked to leave the bags for some hours. It is very near lots of restaurants, bars, pubs, massage parlors.

We were in a 4bed dormitory with private bathroom. We were expecting it to be much worse, but the bathroom was very clean as well as the room. Overall the hostel isn't in very good conditions, the air conditioned was loud and freezing. The worst was the kitchen which had no cutlery or plates, you had to lend them from the reception!! There was dvds and board games as well but you had to lend them as well, for a deposit. It is a huge hostel, very industrial but was good for a night.
