If you wish to recreate the atmosphere of the prison museum down the road, then this is the place for you. We were forewarned about the signs, but this place was covered in them. Obviously the best time to close the showers and toilets for an hours cleaning is in the morning when everyone needs to use them. The staff were either surly or looked like their soul had been beaten out of them with a "no eating" sign. Not all bad: free hair dryers, warm rooms and nice wifi room, when open. Strict.

First, despite booking a double room they presumed we were friends, so put us in single bed/dorms. Then, when checking out, they tried charging us almost double, having charged a huge amount of drinks from someone else to our room. This was only cleared up when we queried it. Very loud noises from the tv and outside all night, so we didn't sleep. And only 3 - very dirty - showers and toilets for the whole place. Overall, a bad experience. Wouldn't recommend.

Pousada Canto Verde

The bed, pillows, and sheets all smelled so bad of mould or damp, it was almost impossible to sleep. We had to use our own sheet, and didn't sleep well with the smell. The toilet leaked, and as a result, the entire bathroom and room stank of wee. It was horrendous, we couldn't relax in our room and using the bathroom was very difficult to endure. Such a shame, as the staff were lovely, the breakfast was amazing, and the chill-out area was so relaxing. But our room ruined the experience.

Samba Green Hostel

This is the friendliest, cleanest hostel I've stayed in! All the staff were so helpful and knowledgable, we really felt at home. Carlos was really welcoming and went the extra mile, especially with his amazing caipirinhas. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who was going to Rio, and will go back if I ever return. Great location for sugar loaf and the beaches.

the location is fine, just a 10min walk into town. it was a very professional hostel, and very very clean!! everyone had a locker by their bed, which was brilliant, and the rooms were a great spacious size.
