Great for a solo traveler. No wifi in rooms so everyone hangs in the communal area. Free coffee. Buy beers and food in reception. Bathrooms very dirty. I would happily stay there again.

Good location for daytime (although next time I will stay in Old Town -closer to nightlife and tour meeting points). 12pm checkout/breakfast! Good facilities & large open rooms. Bar has very cheap drinks. Party atmosphere. The big let down was one staff member who checked me in (really tall guy) made zero effort and answering basic questions about the place appeared too much of an effort. Also it's about 1-1.5km from my main bars/meeting points. I'd stay there again if Old Town hostels are full.

Great hostel with all the facilities and close to the Tube/shops. If I was in a group, this would be my "go to" hostel in London. As I'm a solo traveller, it was lacking a little on the social interaction side (although it has a bar), and I have a preference for smaller hostels. Summary: Can't go wrong in this place.

POSITIVES: Staff are very friendly and go above what is expected. Good cooking facilities. Alcohol allowed in common area. Good common area for solo traveller. Dorm beds have curtains (allows a great sleep with no sun). Plenty of showers/toilets. Supermarket is close. NEGATIVES: A little far out of town (you will want to take the tram and this can add up quickly). SUMMARY: You don't have much choice in Gothenburg. This will be my regular hostel next time I'm there.

Not much choice in Zurich. Dodgy area but very safe during the day (although I did have a guy on drugs randomly spit on me and try to pick a fight when sitting outside the hostel). Very noisy so bring earplugs. Room was great. Very big and excellent cooking facilities. Felt like an apartment not a dorm. Owner was welcoming and very friendly. The other staff were unhelpful and didn't want to be there. Nice bar downstairs for a solo traveller.

Great hostel - this will now be my "go to" hostel in London. POSITIVES: Location is very close to shops and tube station. All the standard facilities. Friendly staff. Free breakfast. Cosy little common room to meet people. NEGATIVES:- very, very, very hot in the rooms. Wifi is not reliable.

Weird people everywhere but I always felt very safe (and would be fine for a solo girl). Close to main station (literally 200m). Lots of cheap food places nearby. They never served food at the bar like the other Generator Hostels. Painfully hot rooms (I had to change rooms but the staff were very accomodating). Black guy behind the bar was excellent and friendly and made my stay great. If staying in a dorm, this is OK (apart from heat), if in a private room, look elsewhere for better value.

PROS: Good location, has a bar and it's easy to meet people. CONS: Rooms were painfully hot and opposite a construction site. Noise I can handle with earplugs, lying on your back in your underwear on your bed sweating at 5am in the morning is not fun. No kitchen facilities and you can't bring foreign food inside. Like others have mentioned, the staff make it very clear they don't want to be working. SUMMARY: Request a room not facing the road.

I'd strongly recommend for individual travellers wanting to meet people. Great party feel to the hostel. Excellent cooking facilities. Great court yard where it's easy to meet people. Alcohol is allowed. Close to city centre. Alcohol shop and supermarket nearby. 7/11 next door. Regular activities are organised.

The staff are nice and very helpful and there are only three so you can get to know them. Great location and very close to the Central Terminal. The late check-in system works fine. Alcohol is not permitted so definitely not a party hostel. I'd recommend the place for groups or people who want some quiet time.

Overall I'm happy with the place and I won't look for another hostel when next in London. Breakfast is a true "unlimited" breakfast with toast and cereal. It gets very hot (uncomfortable) in the upstairs rooms so they should get portable fans. Nice area downstairs to watch TV and meet people. Good kitchen facilities. Internet is not reliable and regularly cuts out, but it's free if you have a computer / smartphone so no complaints. It's just under 1km to the tube and shops.

I've stayed here several times and won't even bother looking around. It was great. Although it is expensive for Thailand, the facilities are excellent. Very close to Khao San Road. Great for an individual traveller. Strong and fast wifi, exceptionally clean. Great air conditioning. Communal area where it's easy to meet people. If you want to meet people to party, this is a great place.

New and clean. Excellent security. Big lockers with power points in them (bring a lock). You can bring in your own alcohol. Avoid 6 bed mixed dorm (mine had no window and only one very dim light). There is a bar next door, however it was never busy and there was nothing organised at night (except TV night etc.). Good hostel overall - Definitely recommend for anyone traveling in a group. If by yourself, you may want to look for a "party" hostel.

Pretty good location. 10min easy walk to city centre. No regular activities organised, but you can bring in your own alcohol and there's always people around. DEFINITELY need ear plugs. I can sleep through a lot, but the rooms were very hot so we had to have the windows open (and the hostel is on a main road). But WHY is there no soap or towels in the bathrooms? Annoying having to go back to your room every time you use the bathroom. Especially if you're on the top floor.

See previous reviews. Overall happy. Forgot to mention worst showers I've seen in a hostel (males level 5). Kept extending my stay out of convenience. Consider Nomads.

Hi Matthew, Thanks for coming to stay with us at Base Auckland. We are glad that overall you enjoyed your stay. If the bathrooms were the worst you have ever seen I'm surprised you decided to stay, but I guess the rest of our facilites were sufficient enough for you to continue your accomodation with us. Good luck with the rest of your travels. Cheers, Bec at Base Auckland

Pro: great location, very central. Fun atmosphere. Easy to meet people. Great pub crawl. Cons: Internet VERY expensive. $10 a day and locked to one thing. Ie iPad or laptop or iPhone etc. Breakfast is poor for what it costs. Base dollars are non existent. All their free stuff promotions (pizza, drinks etc) start 45 mins after stated time so you have nothing to do other than buy drinks from the bar. Can't take in your own alcohol. I saw Nomads as well. Consider them.

Was an ok hostel. The Irish manager was nice and helpful. Location is great. If I went to San Fran again I would stay at USA hostels. Much more fun. If you get a private at the adelaide you will stay just around the corner in a cheap hotel which is actually pretty good.

Great hostel. Excellent free breakfast. The downstairs communal area is very social and easy to meet people. You can bring in your own alcohol. Power outlets in the lockers. Bring a large padlock as small don't fit. Has a party vibe to the place.

Brand new and very clean. Fast wifi. Great patio upstairs and free BBQ on sat night. Definitely book the niagra falls tour through them. Was a great day tour for $55. Free breakfast was a choice of cereals, toast and bagels. Kitchen has a dishwasher! Ask Teika for a personal demonstration of Latvian Folk Dancing and also a tour of the haunted castle. I'm 31 and didn't realize I was still scared of the boogeyman.

Great location. Lots of drunks etc around but you never feel unsafe. Very central. The lady running it is really nice and helpful. Definitely not a party hostel. Quite a lot of long term tenants from other CPU tires looking for work there. Not fun at all, but very cheap for Oslo.

Castanea Old Town Hostel

Very clean. Good location. Was very full of families definitely not a party hostel while I stayed there. Only annoying thing was the reception was only there for a couple of hours in the morning and afternoon. You need a telephone to check in if not during tjose times and must wait until those times to ask questions. Now staying at city back packers and they are much better. Otherwise a good hostel.

Owner Comment (Hide)
To clarify I just want to inform you that if you make the booking more than one day before arrival you have the opportunity to contact us via email to get the information for early/late check-in, before your arrival, and not using a telephone. We hope you still could enjoy your short stay here with us.

The location is excellent. Walk to the beach and best night life. Supermarket close by. You can bring in your own alcohol. Roy and Veronica do a fantastic job at making everyone feel welcome. The living room joins to the kitchen and is also the central hangout so it is extremely easy to socialize. I'd definitely recommend. Especially for a lone traveller.

Very nice rooms. Clean, comfy, dark, great aircon. Location is excellent. No organised nightings, but the lobby is great to meet people and is the social hangout. If you get a 6bed room you might be in the room next to the lobby which is loud at night. The 22 bed no probs. Its not your typical 22 bed dorm. There is a seperator that they pull down between bunks at night

Great for one night to say you have done it, but any longer will send you crazy. No real common room, you cant enter the building between 10am and 5pm. Your clothes/ belongings etc are on different floors to the showers and your big back pack remains in lobby. DEFINATELY DO FOR 1 NIGHT. but no more than 2. Very clean. Decent location
