The Westgate Hotel

The staff were helpful and welcoming at this basic B&B. It's the sort where the carpet is wearing a bit thin and the wallpapers is a bit scuffed, but the rooms are clean and the bed comfortable. The breakfast was better than expected for £40/night in Oxford and included a homemade fruit salad, crunchy croissants and a cooked breakfast (1 egg, 1 bacon, 1 sausage, 1/2 tomato, 2 pieces of toast). The location is very convenient to the train station. The street was not a noisy one.

HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel

Very cool to stay in such a historic venue complete with brickwork and cells. However not an appropriate hostel for the traveller needing quiet and sleep. The barred cells mean that any ambient noise is not otherwise blocked out by walls and doors. Although the other residents of the hostel were quiet by 11pm, the noise of the (loud) gig next door kept us awake until 1am. If we'd been in a situation of going out that evening, it would have been fine, but we had to get up at 5am for a flight.

Overall the hostel was good with cheap eats for residents at their bar. Unfortunately this meant that it was also a very noisy location. If you like burning the midnight oil then this isn't a problem. A communal kitchen area would have been nice but did not detract from the overall experience.
