Funky Fes

Efficiently run hostel, but the staff are a little on the cool/'professional' side for a hostel. Clean rooms, good breakfast, good facilities and felt secure. Good location once you've become familiarised with the area, but difficult to find at first (might be better sign-posted from Place R'Cif). Could be more information on the city of Fes and environs available from the reception + a better map is seriously needed.

If it wasn't for the friendly, disorganised but charming staff, I'd have given this place a terrible review. But despite my bed being a mattress on the floor; the toilets, lights, showers etc frequently not working, there was a disarming 'feel-good' vibe about the hostel that meant that I enjoyed my stay there. An English lady seems to have recently taken control of getting this place into shape and I'm sure in a few weeks/months there'll be a lot of simple improvements - cleanliness being one.

Great hostel. Good atmosphere, though that was due mainly to the combination of guests. Good breakfast, but be prepared to wait if you're an early riser. Exceptionally clean (I've been staying in hostels for 20+ yrs and this was the cleanest hostel I've ever stayed at - fresh towels every day etc). Good location for daytime and early evening, very close to the Jemaa square, but after dark, the walk back (last 200m in particular, down a quiet laneway) feels a bit uncomfortable, so be sensible.

Excellent facilities (though the only complaint I'd have is that the lockers should be in the rooms, not the corridors). Good value breakfast. Felt clean (e.g. you're given sheets and towel on check-in) and warm, comfortable beds with each bed having its own light and power connections for charging laptops etc. The location is the only real downside to this hostel and at check-in, staff could be a little more helpful/forthcoming with tram information/walking directions etc.

Overall, quite happy with the hostel, but as a solo female traveller, thought that the last 50m of the walk back to the hostel at night-time didn't feel the safest. That's nothing to do with the hostel just the vibe from the street that it's located on. Might be brighter lit on the outside. Some of the reviews on this site are critical of the cleanliness - I didn't find it dirty as much as tired/shabby & certainly the kitchens could be cleaner, but this is a reflection on the guests not staff.

The most comfortable hostel bunk beds I've ever experienced! Excellent hostel. Good location, even for solo female travellers - don't be put off by its proximity to bus/train stations (usually a warning sign), as this hostel is in the main old town and in a well-lit area - felt safe walking home at night. Make sure that you check out the fabulous fresh food/knick-knack market in the old airfield hangars across the road. Brilliant, free tour of Riga at 12noon daily - ask reception for details
