The Art House Backpackers, Napier, New Zealand

Interesting wooden building. Very helpful staff and industrious cleaners. Comfortable beds, small lockers. Spoiled by idle hostellers who would not wash and put away their crockery and cutlery, and inconsiderate people who thought it normal to converse until 02.30, despite the "No noise after 11pm notices".

Pros: clean hostel, comfy beds, fairly quiet room with air-con, large reception / sitting / eating / bar room. Outside sitting area with large TV screen. Computer. 5 minutes from railway station. Cons: non-stop muzac, unbearably loud in evenings.

Pros: enormous bed and sitting rooms, very clean, quiet (apart from wedding party next door until 04.00), Cons: No kitchen. Ignore directions to walk around walls unless you like a long walk. Head north and slightly left from Railway Station, into Old Town, to Anfiteatro and San Pedriano Church. Hostel a few metres from church. About 10 minutes' walk.

Ciao thank you for your good review. For what concern the directions by walk from the train station, we have written two different options...one easy but longer, and another faster but more complicated.

A strange place with no access from 11.00 to 16.00; `walk slowly` signs in the corridors; no noise after 21.00. Perfect for light sleepers like me.

Spoiled by non-stop noise pollution in the common area and inconsiderate hostellers: who thought it was acceptable to sort out the contents of a suitcase, with much rustling of polythene bags, at 22.30; spend an hour, until 23.30, with a light on doing something to her hands; come in and out of the room a number of times; switch a light on and hang up laundry at 00.45 and inform me she could put a light on anytime she wanted to; play with cellphone; a male came in at 01.30 and snored loudly.

Hostel was fine, mosquitoes were a problem. I had more bites in two days in Sri Lanka than two months in India. Yes, I did use repellant.
