Amazingly they are deserving of thier 99% rating. A fairly important concideration is that I'd highly reccomend having a car. Other than the world class surfing spot across the road, (complete with photographers and professional surfers) there isn't much within walking distance. The owners were super generous about giving me rides to the grocery store, but really you want a car. it was also a 4 hour bus ride to and 3 hr bus ride from.
I only have good things to say about this hostel.
One of the best hostels I've been to in over 30 countries. And Paia is the best town on Maui.
Great spot. well run. The best town on Maui. Great tours. Social, easy to meet people, but not a party hostel.
Well run hostel. Centrally located in Waikiki. 10 minute walk to the beach. Bars and restaurants 1 min walk. Social atmosphere but not a party hostel which I prefer. The main drawback is that you are surrounded by high rise apartment buildings, and the noises and lights of the city, really not the reason to go to Hawaii. Outside of the perfectly good hostel, I'd recommend spending very little time, if any in Waikiki. Hawaii has so much more to offer.
Overall a good spot. I had a private room with bath that was recently (cheaply) remodeled. Reasonably quiet at night. I think it was supposed to have Air Con, but it wasn't working. Did have a ceiling fan. Good Wi-Fi in the room. Decent breakfast and dinner for $5. Good social atmosphere to meet other travelers. Steps to the trolley for a 15 minute ride to the French Quarter. I recommend the 10 minute walk to Whole Foods on Broad St for better food and $1 gallons of water.
Excellent spot. Fantastic deck right on the river.
Easy walk to old town. very nice, spacious and clean rooms. Helpful staff. 24 hour reception.
Cool spot right next to the east side gallery (the berlin wall). Sit on the patio, on the river have a beer, and watch the sunset. Smack dab in the middle of the area where all the famous street art is. Lower rating for the horrible smell wafting out of the mens bathroom. The manager said they are aware of it...
Cool place. You can sit on the patio bar and watch the sunset. The "east gallery" which is part of the Berlin wall is right there. I took a walking tour of the "underground" berlin. graffiti covered building. I'm not too impressed with that juvenile form of the expression of defiance, but that seems to be one think people want to see in Berlin, and the tour was in the neighborhood. They get a failing grade for the cleanliness of the men's bathroom. the odor rolls down the hallway it is so bad.
Decent spot. Amsterdam Hostels are generally overpriced. Helpful staff. The common area is set up like a diner. I suggested changes to the owner and he said he was planning on putting in some couches and different lighting, which would help A LOT. Not very good for meeting other travelers, thus the low mark for atmosphere. decent spot overall.
Perfect combination of social place to meet other travelers and quiet at night so you can sleep. Excellent location.
Good hostel. But a 10 minute walk to the subway, and a 20 minute subway ride to the city center.
Great place overall. The pictures are false advertising. It makes it look like it is on the beach, which it is not. It is in a nice neighborhood 2 blocks to the beach. They kind of hard sell the hostel owners restaurant which is a great place to have a beer, or some food, but the food is just OK. Split old town is really cool, half the people walking around are locals and they live there. much more authentic than Dubrovnik.
Nice, chill, social, international crowd. Most significant negative thing, it is at least 30 minutes to get to Manhattan by subway, not 10 like it says on the little bio. The staff is great. The owner is milking the s#$t out of the property. There are 14 beds is a shack in the back yard. and another 10 in the relatively dark basement. The only proper rooms are upstairs, 4 rooms with 4 beds each.
