The Chill House Backpackers hostel, Cartagena, Colombia

15th Aug 2017

Only one shared shower & toilet for 10-bed dorm and then staff usher you to the ensuite in the 6-bed regardless of time of day. Staff clean from 7am and it's not ideal when you are sleeping... Internet is decent and it's central location is good.

Really nice place, basic dorms are comfortable and have light/power but not much room for all the luggage. Staff were nice, breakfast is included and you sign up the night before. Didn't get my breakfast order right but the muesli was still ok. Good location for supermarket and using as a base to explore the city.

22nd Jun 2017

Good location, close to the Móvil Tours bus station to the North. Bit of a walk to centre but it's through street markets and well lit. Big private rooms, plenty of space but uncomfortable beds and poor pillows. Hot water and internet worked well. Basic and decent enough value for a night! They sold tours at good prices (S/.35) compared to other hostels which sold to their guests for S/.60 (bad form Alan)!!

Enjoyed our stay, comfy bed, good hot shower, friendly staff, location is a bit out of town but it's a straightforward and pleasant enough walk to main square. Best internet we've had in South America one day and frustratingly slow the next... Booked our Colca Canyon tour with them and it was good value. We were able to leave our luggage and have a shower when we returned (S/.15). Breakfast was ok but be warned you won't get anything the day of any early activities or tours.

Great location when arriving by bus into La Paz, and good for exploring the centre and North. Easy to get transport down to the trendy area of Sopocachi for the Yellow & Green Telefonicios! Stayed in B&B, showers were hot and internet was decent. Staff were helpful and there was storage if you went on a multi-day trek. Saya Beer was good and a big fan of the free beer!

Really enjoyed my stay here in central Mendoza, hostel was big enough that you can find some peace and quiet then between 7-9pm the free wine flows and it's a more social scene. Found it really quiet and slept brilliantly. Breakfast was ok, kitchen can get busy and you have to ask for oil etc but it is available. Jorge was brilliant at desk helping me with my Spanish! Accepts credit cards and give towels which was great. Strong internet too throughout!

Recommended! Is it the best hostel in South America, probably not but it's really good if you don't go expecting the best hostel. Staff were great, beds were comfy, laundry service was reasonable and quick, bar (& happy hour) were added bonus and added to the extremely social side of the hostel. Tours were good and well priced. Food served at Hostel looked good. The three kitchens were needed with the numbers of people! Wifi wasn't the best, and with 55 dorm beds more toilets & showers needed.

One of the best hostels I've visited! Shame it only has 3x dorm beds as I couldn't extend my stay. The hostel is set up perfectly for couples looking for quality rooms. The beds were big & comfortable, fast wifi, wood burning heater, breakfast is good, local craft beer was great (and very reasonable). Top value for money. Owner was brilliant too, gave me a couple of great recommendations for drinks and food. Can't say enough good things about it apart from lights on stairs could work better.

Excellent location for the bus station but the other end of town for majority of treks (but ultimately you choose which you prefer based on arrival or departure time). The kitchen is decent although the fridge was jam packed all the time. Beds were a bit shaky and ladders could be better. Nice number of power sockets in dorms. Internet is good when working but slightly intermittent. Staff were helpful!

I really liked this hostel/camp site, the internet was top notch and the shared space was decent for hostel users to use. Shower block had good hot water. Kitchen could do with some TLC and some basic items but if you have all your own stuff it works.

The location is fine if you know and are happy to walk to/from town. Hostel is easy walk to the airport and closer to the National Park if you want to walk there or hitchhike. The hostel is clean and dorms are decent. Bunks are a bit small (height) but comfy. Decent number of toilets and showers, there are two kitchens which works well. Private rooms looked good. Basic breakfast. Everyone was happy at the place and had no complaints. Thanks

Dorm bed was really comfy and the pillow was the best I've had through Brazil, Paraguay & Uruguay! Really chilled place, great spot to base yourself from to explore the surprisingly interesting city. Sofia was nice at check in and staff answered questions throughout. Not really enough toilets for the number of beds and the breakfast is very simple. The combined map for the 4x Uruguay locations isn't really fit for purpose.

Just seemed dated, won an award in 2011 for being Top Three Hostel in South America and doesn't seem to have done anything or fixed things since. Desktop computer was useful rather than using tablet and internet was good. Staff helped with bus directions. Acceptable for price but I moved to a better and more welcoming hostel for the same price for a further couple of nights in area.

The hostel was fine, the pictures on the site were not representative of the room or facilities we were given but it had decent security, was pretty central, the staff were good and it served it's purpose as somewhere we could stay reasonably close to the train station. We were spoilt by a different hostel for the first few nights.

A really nice surprise! As a new hostel this still has a shiny and new feel about it but it is very good, excellent common spaces, very spacious bunks (they could fit more beds in) but the openness means that each room has common feel to it. Made to feel very welcome, identified a couple of good recommendations for drinks and food (both excellent). Very light was our only slightly negative comment as the rooms benefit from plenty of natural daylight very early!

He also offered a very reasonable boat trip for a few hours that we took him up on with some Aussies at the hostel - great fun. The food at the restaurant downstairs was excellent and really good value. Diolch yn fawr

Although we found it a little difficult to locate (the sign is above eye view) it shares the building with Heart of Sarajevo hostel (who's sign is very easy to see) the hostel was great. Checked in and told about a free/tip tour taking place within 30 mins which was extremely good and informative (should be for the three hours we walked around). Would recommend it to anyone staying in such a great city!
