Lovely hostel in a nice quiet location. A bit out of town so if you want a party hostel look elsewhere, although the location would be excellent if you want to see a rugby match at Eden Park.

Quite a party hostel, but nice clean rooms with decent facilities and aircon.

Party hostel, if you mind that there's a bar in the basement open until 5am and rammed to rafters with drunken backpackers then avoid. If, on the other hand, you're a backpacker looking to socialise this is your place. Very centrally located if you can handle the noise, private rooms are at the top of the building so as far away as possible. Also - book private rooms direct, the Hostelworld mark up on arrival was $15 per room per night for a single.

Owner Comment (Hide)
Hi, and thanks for taking the time out to pass on your feedback. We are a bit of a social backpackers - that's one of our great selling points! As far as your comments regarding the price go the reason the rates were higher for your stay was the Bledisloe Cup match on that weekend. Other than special events our Hostelworld rate is never marked up. Cheers, The Base Central Crew

Great hostel, the only minor flag to raise is that it's not one for late sleepers - check out is 9:30am. Otherwise can't fault it, really quirky with excellent staff.

Lovely relaxed hostel, just far enough from the bustle to be quiet but a short walk from everywhere. Excellent.

Banyan View Lodge

Nice quiet hostel if you don't want to be stuck in the middle of the Mitchell St. drinking zone, 10 minutes walk from the middle of town. Private rooms are a decent price with good aircon and fridges in the room. Only minor point is that access to Wifi (paid or free) would be nice, there are two computers for free internet access so you can get on but there's almost always a queue.

Very much a working hostel, poor location and institutional decor.

Very central location, so close to everything but a bit noisy as a result - I stayed on a Sunday and a bar around the corner was playing loud music until well after midnight. That said the hostel sell earplugs so there are ways around that, and being 5 minutes from everything in the city was great. Would stay again.

Lovely little guesthouse, highly recommended.

Very cheap but security is a worry. The stairway is open and unsupervised 24 hours a day, allowing my travelling companions' shoes to be stolen. Also the doors to the accommodation floors were frequently left open, and as the locks on the rooms were pretty flimsy it seems quite a risk

Hostal Facundo

Seriously poor quality hostel, the only good thing I can think of is that it's big and so has lots of space in the high season. The Melting Pot was infinitely better and I came across several travellers who were trying desperately to leave the Facundo to go *anywhere* else that would take them. A place of last resort, no better.
