The hostel was good, an average yha. The staff was very helpful with planning the hiking trips and it was very good that you could rent hiking gear there (from clothes to shoes, crampons, ice axe etc...) The only annoying thing was that they don"t really have a lounge for people to hang out, just a small, small tv room hidden away in the last corner of the hostel :(
Pentlands is an awesome hostel! The staff is really nice and helpful and everything is really clean and well maintained. Big kitchen and much space to meet fellow travellers! I will definitely come again when I'm back in Auckland... :-)
1983 has been one of the best hostels I've been to so far! Erick, the owner, is ever so nice and helpful! Actually everyone staying there was really friendly. It felt like being part of a big family :-) The dorms and beds and showers were very good and clean - the curtains for the bunk beds are a great idea btw! Free WIFI plus a massive TV, if you wanna stay inside. The location is a bit tricky to find when arriving, but once you've understood how the streets are numbered it's pretty easy.
athmosphere very sterile - lounge was uncomfortable, no one wanted to hang around there so you couldn't get in touch with other travellers. bed sheets and matresse smelly and stained. no real bed sheets, just woollen blankets (too cold). showers are closed 10-13.30 - what about people on holiday who want to sleep longer?! same problem with breakfast time (until 9.30 am - come on!!!!) wi-fi didn't work, signal was only available in the lounge. very poor.
