This hostel has a great common area, which really brought together all the travelers. This I think can make or break one's traveling experience so I recommend the hostel based on its ambiance = ) The hostel has a kitchen and its very secure - has a baggage room to keep your luggage during the day etc... However... the the rooms are bit too tiny for all the triple bunker beds. I would say the actual beds and rooms are not so comfy as it feels a bit claustorphobic and stuffy...
Hatters has a wonderful common area that brings together travelers from all walks of life. Ambiance and security are the most important for me and it has both. Not to mention, they give out free tea and toast which helps in cold Manchester = ) They also play great music there, which is rare and a +. The staff are very friendly and one of them even gave us a tour of the local pubs. It gets an A + in terms of ambiance and security but it is cold there! It could be warmer in the lounge and rooms.
This hostel is in a great location and is located on top of a pub near the Vic. coach station. Its very convenient but it lacks a back-packers ambiance as there isn't a common area that is separated from the pub... Not sure if they have a kitchen either... which may be a problem if you're staying longer than two days... On the other hand, for a safe and comfortable place to sleep for a few days - it works. The triple bunkers are oddly comfy and are placed in large rooms so it feels spacious.
You need warmer showers! And you need to work on improving the heating system! We freezed our asses off in the hostel dorms outside of the main building.
