Hostel Manga Rosa

More like a home than a hostel. Great place to chill out and relax by the pool for a day after visiting the falls. It's a bit out of town (5 min taxi from the bus station) but only a 5 min walk to supermarket & cash machine. The owners are great, on arrival he paid the taxi driver as we didn't have any Reals and invited us to have dinner with him over a lovely, authentic Brazilian meal. There's fast wifi and computers and a nice lounge to watch a movie in. Nice big fully equipped kitchen to cook

Good location right opposite the bus station and nice touch of the cinema screen in the garden. We stayed in a private with shared bathroom, yet the showers are downstair in the dorm which was a bit of a pain and felt like you are intruding as you have to walk the dorm and other peoples stuff to get there. Staff were neither really friendly or rude, so just a bit so-so.

Owner Comment (Hide)
Hi Matt, Thankyou for taking the time to comment on Hostelworld. Customer feedback is very important to us. We are glad you enjoyed the cinema, it was a recent improvement on top of Tango lessons and also a new addition Spanglish night where local people and guests can meet to improve their Spanish and English. We are also in the process of refurbishing the bar and improving some of the rooms. Unfortunately due to the configuration of the house, we cannot add an ensuite bathroom to the room you occupied. We hope that sharing a bathroom did not ruin your experience at the hostel and iguazu in general. Have a safe and pleasant onward trip.

Great staff and general facilities (excluding the kitchen which needs to be much bigger and better cleaned for size of hostel). If you are going there and fancy socializing/having the odd night out in the city then it is no mean guaranteed and will depend on who else is staying there. We went there hoping to meet lots of like minded people (ie. not young and crazy, but up for a few drinks) however the older clientele which seem to favour this hostel meant on most nights we didnt have any luck ;(

Alegria's Hostel

We booked this hostel off the back of its modern and flashy website, which gave the impression it was some boutique hostel, which ultimately lead us to be very underwelmed. Firstly, all the private rooms are in a different building down the road which meant there wasn't much of an atmosphere. Also some of the pictures on the website (ie the TV room) have quite blantantly been changed! The rooms are spacious, kitchens good, 2 gorgeous dogs and v clean, just not what we were expecting.

Good cozy hostel with good staff in a good location. Only two bathrooms though meant you had to wait in the morning.

First off the staff were very helpful. Found the set up slightly odd- basically a residential flat turned into mini hostel. Also the private doubles were in a characterless building across the way. It was my first stay in Manila and if a backpacker I would recommend staying in malate rather than makati, much more convenient- nearer more shops and don't need to get a taxi to the main tourist attractions, can use the metro instead, also more bars to meet other. Congestion is really bad!

Relative to your experience, we think that the comments are valid. The good news is in a few days we are moving to a much bigger and even more strategic location, closest to all modes of transpo. However, even in the private rooms where you stayed, going to the main tourist attractions could have been easier if you were in close contact with our staff who normally accompany our guests for a day-tour of Manila, using the public mode of transpo, i.e. jeepneys and the metro. While Malate could be nearer, a 30-minute travel time from our hostel could not be bad after all. Even useful tips on avoiding traffic congestion could be obtained in coordination with our staff. We thank you anyway for your comments and for having opted to stay with us.
