Great place, smallish room but high to the ceiling. Breakfast included, great staff attitude and great location.
Damp cellar. A-beautifully-designed-with-attention-to-detail-and-good-stuff-in-it damp cellar, but still a damp cellar. We like spacious rooms with volume, so I booked this since it said "ceiling fan" on the web site. It was a small shock when we arrived that our room was without ceiling fan (because it would have cut the head even of my wife if she stood up in the room) but instead a small room with low to the ceiling. Only the two non-en suite rooms should be high-ceilinged with fans.
Old house (3-4 of them) that is freshened up and each house only has a few (4) rooms which are pleasantly large. Good kitchen and decent lounge, free (and working) wi-fi. Best is the friendly staff.
Very well kept, looks fresher and newer now than six years ago. All staff very friendly.
Nice and very calm old house with a friendly old man as manager. Good location a bit away from The train tracks. Clean rooms and bathrooms, otherwise some dust Gould be seen. De got a large room with high to The ceiling, nice. Not a place for The "party type".
Twice in a row??? After having booked (through Hostelworld.com) a room at Simon\'s Town Backpackers, and at arrival finding that the room was rented out to someone else, we didn\'t expect the same thing to happen at the next hostel... However, that was exactly what happened at 147@Main as well! We arrived after three in the afternoon, and was greeted with a: - It\'s full. - But we have booked an ensuite twin room for two nights? - No, we have no room available. - But we booked through Hostelworld! - You have to show me the paper, do you have that? - Yes, I just need to open this case, the lock is a bit tricky. - Nevermind, I\'ll show you what it is we got. ...so we followed her to the room, and we can understand they considered the hostel full, even though no-one had rented it. It wasn\'t a twin, but a double, and it was placed in the middle of the building. The only window in the room was to the kitchen/dining room, so that we could get all the smell and noise from when people made/ate breakfast or dinner! The room wasn\'t near to clean either, nothing like the other hostels we have stayed in. While 147@Main looks a bit worn, the rest of the place wasn\'t as bad as that room. Even if she had offered a hefty discount, which she didn\'t, it was a room we couldn\'t stay in. We had to forfeit the booking fee (we\'ll contact Hostelworld.com and see if they will do something about the \"money for nothing\" we now have paid to them twice) and run to out beloved Big Blue Backpackers.
No, that\'s not how to run a place... We had booked three nights through Hostelworld, but when we arrived the room was already rented out to someone else. We were presented with a small, windowless room of another category - a \"take it or leave it\"... We got a discount and a promise to get our booked room the following two nights. We got that, a very nice room, but when it was time to pay he wanted more money than agreed upon - \"the room we finally got was better than the on we should have had...\"
The place would have gotten a 100% for cleanliness, wouldn\'t it have been we smelled mould from an outer wall - despite the room being \"drenched\" in flower essence. I think this goes only for the room we had, but no other room was available to change to.
Very friendly and nice place, with a lawn with pool shared with a B&B. Nothing to complain about at all, and Mossel Bay was a very nice place too.
A very nice place well situated for exploring the sights in Oudtshoorn. Clean, friendly, good grilled ostrich fillet dinner, good DIY ostrich egg breakfast. Fans saved the night, good kitchen facilities and safe parking, good bar.
Everything was very good, but for the smallish rooms in the current heat we really wouldn\'t had minded the ceiling fans we had at Big Blue... Zebra is a very nice place to meet/make friends, with an outdoor \"courtyard\" & cafe where you can sit and talk. Very friendly and effective staff, more toilet/shower facilities than most hostels (including Big Blue) and good location. The \"fun\" I have rated is \"Chill fun\" - the place is calm.
This wasn\'t really what we thought, and not the place for us. We have stayed at several \"Chill & Surfy\" type of places before, but none that is 40 minutes from the beach... So, you need a car - even though the owner can transport you for a nominal fee to different places. Their web site didn\'t say it was on the beach, but the name and the fact that the guide books didn\'t say otherwise fooled us. Other than that: a good-humored place with a great, \"one-person staff\", friendly and some good bar evenings. Bed sheets and toilets are clean, which is the most important, kitchen and other places lees clean.
Creaky floors! That\'s the only \"negative\" you can find to say about Big Blue\'s inside, on the outside the pool ain\'t too hot... Other than that a great place, clean & friendly, large double rooms, free internet and coffee&tea. A short walk to V&A Waterfront.
