YHA London Oxford Street, London, England

9th Mar 2020

Fantastic location right in the heart of the West End. Very close to Soho and to Oxford Circus tube station. Not surprisingly the hostel itself feels a little cramped (especially the toilets). Showers were clean and there is a communal area on the floor where the reception is. Staff are friendly and breakfast is available for an extra fee. Lockers available too for a fee. Not the most atmospheric of hostels but hard to complain when the location is this good.

Great standards as you'd expect from a YHA. My dorm room was clean but the bathroom itself was quite small. Very well run all the same with the hostel having a restaurant which served a great breakfast for an extra fee. Good location too as walking distance into the city centre and close to Deandgate-Castlefield metro. The hostel is a bit too large for an intimate atmosphere but staff can arrange many excursions from here and there is plenty of communal space on the ground floor.

Run by a lovely Chinese family, this hostel is a good option as it's only a 15 minute walk from both the bus and train stations. The dorms were clean and air-conditioned and beer is sold. The house is spacious but there were only 2 bathrooms in the hostel. There is a lovely balcony to relax in the evenings and a laundry service is provided as well. The property is secure as the main gate is closed in the evening, would happily recommend this place.

This is a very basic hostel but run by a lovely family who do all they can to make guests feel welcome. The rooms are small and comfortable and the bathrooms are clean. There is no key needed to get into any of the rooms but this doesn't seem to be an issue in Ella. The hostel itself is only a 5 minute walk uphill from the town centre and the breakfast served by the hostel is great and varied. Would happily stay here again and I found it had a good atmosphere.

This is a very chilled out hostel. I didn't find the location great as it's a 2km walk from the centre of town and also there is no key needed to get into the actual building itself. The dorms were good though and the bathroom was clean with hot water. There is a communal area inside and a good local breakfast is served every day. Most other guests here seemed to like to chill in the evenings by sitting outside when the owners have a small barbecue.

This is a well run hostel. It's situated about a 15 minute walk from the main attractions of Kandy. I stayed in the capsule dorm which was a bit of a strange experience! The bathrooms were shared but spotless with great showers. Nice communal spaces in the hostel too and a great breakfast served in the mornings. Staff were helpful and professional.

Not that well located as the hostel is on the edge of town. You will need to get tuk tuks to get around the town itself. The property itself is large and peaceful and there are plenty of communal areas to relax in but I didn't find much of a backpacker vibe here. Dorms were clean and the bathrooms were too with piping hot water for the showers. There is also a travel agency in the hostel to arrange excursions and a good breakfast is served here. Staff were friendly.

Decent place to stay even though you may have to climb a few floors to get to your dorm! Staff are friendly and the dorms are air-conditioned and very spacious. It's well located as it's about a 20 minute walk to the train station and is close to Jaffna town centre. A simple breakfast is served and there is a small kitchen that can be used as well. Drinks are sold at reception but there is no other communal space in the hostel itself. Bathrooms are simple but clean.

Really nice hostel with great staff. Dorms are well furnished and air conditioned if maybe a little small. The hotel is in a secure area as it's situated close to the prime minister's residence. There is a nice balcony on the top of the hostel to relax and plenty of communal area to chill on the 1st floor as well. Bathrooms are clean but no hot water in the showers during my stay. The manager speaks great English and is very helpful in assisting with maps and advice etc.

I only stayed in this hostel for 1 night. The staff seemed really nice and the location is excellent as it's only a 15 minute walk from Centraal station. The stairs that lead up to the dorms are steep and require care. The dorm room I stayed in was clean enough and the bed was comfortable. What this place lacks though are general facilities. It's literally just the dorms and the reception from what I saw, so it's good for a night or two but that's about it.

This hostel has very helpful English speaking staff. Bathrooms are very clean and the dorm rooms are comfortable and well furnished. When the hostel is full it can feel a little claustrophobic in the building itself but there's also an outside communal area and good breakfast. Excellent location too as it's only a 15 minute walk from the main city centre area of Chisinau. Would happily stay here again.

The highlight of this hostel is the lovely couple who run it. The hostel is about a 30 minute walk from the bus station but is close by to the city's main street. There is plenty of communal space in the hostel and the beds are clean and comfortable. The only downside is there is only 1 shower at the hostel. The kitchen is large and there's also a computer available for general use. Again, I would happily stay here again.

This huge hostel has an excellent location as it's only a 5 minute walk from the castle. Beds are comfortable and lockers are provided. Staff were very friendly during my stay and breakfast was very reasonable at just £1.50. The hostel is also an excellent source of information for things to do in Scotland. Toilets and showers were clean and adequate, and also you could store luggage here after you check out. I would happily stay here again.

Spotlessly clean dorms as this place is really more of a hotel than a hostel. The beds were very comfortable and the property even has a rooftop bar and a gym. Great location in Hamra too. A little devoid of atmosphere as it's a big place but the buffet breakfast is great. Would happily recommend this place to anyone.

Nice hostel with clean dorms and lockers as well to store your bags in. It's secure as it's on the 4th floor and bathrooms are small but clean with hot water provided. Breakfast is good too and there's a lovely terrace where you can relax. Just bear in mind that the hostel is a good 25 minute walk from the old city. Aside from that was very happy with this place.

First of all, this isn't really a typical hostel, it's more of a normal home with bunk beds put in it. The family who run this place are exceptionally friendly as were the fellow guests during my stay as well. There was a social atmosphere there too. The hostel is close to numerous pubs and is about a 15 minute walk from the bus station. My main issue about this place was the lack of security. The front door isn't locked and often isn't manned.

This place was a decent enough place to stay. There was no lock on the bathroom door but the beds were comfortable and the air conditioning was good. Lockers were also provided. Staff were friendly and the hotel is only a 10 minute walk from the Valletta ferry terminal. Very little atmosphere and it's important to note that the dorm is a room in a hotel, this is not a hostel with a communal area. However, good value for money for staying in Malta.

This is a very atmospheric place to stay but is definitely not a party hostel. The staff are very friendly and the place itself is comfortable but small. Only one shower here which would be a problem if the hostel was full. Even though it's close to the train station it's a fair walk to the downtown area. Beds were comfortable and lockers were provided and I liked this kind of hostel, but a younger person wanting to party shouldn't stay here. The living room is a lovely place to chat and relax.

Great hostel manned by helpful and attentive staff. Good location close to Kensington market and the tram line. The dorm I stayed at was a little cramped but very clean and with comfortable beds. What's great about this hostel is that they have events on every night at the hostel rooftop so is great for solo travellers. The only small gripe I had is that all communal areas closed at midnight sharp so you were forced to the dorms after this time. Overall,an excellent hostel though and recommended

Although this hostel is set in an atmospheric house, staying here in the summer felt like sleeping in an oven. (Although the dorms are air conditioned). Staff were friendly but this hostel felt cramped with little space to move around, and when full you will always be queuing to use the bathroom or shower. It does have a backyard area and living room to watch movies, and a clean kitchen, but in terms of comfort I am sure there are better hostels in Ottawa. Good location close to downtown though.

The staff at this hostel are friendly but don't actually live at the hostel. I had the place to myself which was a bit weird. The location in Otrabanda is good as it's only a 15 minute walk into downtown Willemstad. The area is ok but not an area to walk around very late at night. Great location in the old city and Sammy the owner speaks excellent English and was very friendly. The hostel is in a separate building to the main reception area which acts as a bar at night. Beds were simple but comfortable and there is a nice communal area to chill out at night. Kitchen was good too and the toilets were clean enough. Would happily stay here again.

Generally speaking a great place to stay in Bethlehem which is run by a lovely local family. It's a 10 minute walk from the town centre and is located in a spacious house. Beds are comfortable and the rooms are spacious enough. Unfortunately there was no hot water during my stay and breakfast isn't offered at this hostel. There is a computer for general use and you can buy drinks here as well. Would happily stay here again as I felt very welcome here.

The location of this hostel is fantastic. It's very atmospheric and right in the heart of the old city. Unfortunately the eight bed dorm I stayed in was so cramped that I had to change outside the room and there was hardly any space to put luggage. The room smelt a bit too as there were no windows in the dorm. Staff are friendly and the views from the hostel rooftop is great. Kitchen was fairly clean as were the toilets and showers and there is one computer for general use.

I really liked this hostel. It has a great location in downtwon Tel Aviv and is only a 15 minute walk from the main bus station. The dorms were clean and the beds were comfortable. The staff were friendly and the hostel gives lots of good advice of what to do and where to eat in Tel Aviv. Breakfast costs 10 shekels and there's a bar and a computer for internet use too. Would happily stay here again.

Good option for Brussels. Walking distance to the city centre and has good quality rooms. The 10 bed dorm I was in though only had 1 bathroom and toilet and could do with more. Staff were professional and multi lingual. It's a large hostel and was very busy during my stay. May not appeal to somebody looking for a more chilled out experience. Good facilities and I would happily stay here again.

Nice location inside beautiful Holland Park. Staff are informative and many services such as lockers, luggage storage, information about events etc are provided. The 20 bed dorm is cramped though and luckily wasn't full during my stay. (3 beds on top of each other with little space in between). There are computers for guest use but you have to pay to use these and for the wifi too. An excellent breakfast is available for 5 pounds and there is a kitchen and tv room for guest use.

The hostel is a bit far from Central Recife but is located in a nice neighbourhood with a beautiful beach. Staff are English speaking and helpful. The dorms are comfortable if a bit cramped in space and the property could do with a few more toilets but both these and the showers are clean. Breakfast is typically Brazilian and sufficient. There's a computer for guest use and good wifi. The atmosphere is good here and the hostel is located close to a large supermarket. I would stay here again.

A good place to stay. The English speaking owner is friendly and the hostel itself is a spacious place. Fusion also acts as a cultural centre and you can also attend dance classes here and buy paintings. Location is excellent as it is right next to Praca de Se and security is good too. The dorms are comfortable and lockers are provided. The walls between the rooms are thin though so noise from other rooms carries easily. Showers are cold but this isn´t a problem with Salvador´s warm climate.

There is a nice vibe about this place and it attracts a chilled out crowd. The downstairs area is a nice place to chill. This hostel is close to the beach and is about a 20 minute walk from the town centre. The staff are English speaking and friendly and the facilities here are good. There is a spacious kitchen for guest use and plenty of communal areas to chill out downstairs. There is a computer for guest use and a TV to watch movies. The dorms are spacious and comfortable and the bathrooms are clean and there`s hot water for showers. You will need to get a taxi to get here from the bus station.

It was hard to find this place as it is located down a side street away from the road. This is a nice place to stay as it is relaxing and attracts a chilled out crowd. There is a small kitchen for guest use and a good pancake breakfast with tea or coffee is served. There is both an outside communal area and an indoor one too. There is also a computer for guest use and dvds to watch. It is about a ten minute walk to the main plaza. Only two showers though in the hostel, could do with more.

The woman who runs this hostel speaks good English and is friendly. I got the impression at times though they weren´t organised with their booking system. This is a busy hostel with many people passing through. The dorms are comfortable but cramped. There are two resting areas and a pool table downstairs and a tv and computer on the 1st floor. There are hot showers and the toliets are clean. The location is good as it´s situated between the bus station and the main high street.

The main drawback to this place is that it`s difficult to get hot water from the showers. The floor boards are also creaky in the bedrooms so you make noise when you walk on them. Apart from that I really liked it here. It`s a cosy hostel located in a charming building and is small enough to meet people. Staff are very friendly and a simple breakfast is provided. The dorms are comfortable and there`s plenty of bedding to cope with Cusco`s cold nights. There`s a computer for guest use too.

This isn`t the best located hostel in Miraflores as it`s 8 blocks north of Parque Kennedy. Saying that, the hostel itself is nice and cosy. This isn`t a party hostel at all. The dorms are comfortable, lockers are provided and the bathrooms are clean and the showers are hot. Staff are multilingual and are eager to please and are helpful. A simple breakfast of bread and coffee is served in the morning and there`s a computer for guest use and a kitchen as well. I would happily stay here again.

This is a good option if you wish to explore central Lima (recommended) as it`s walking distance to the main attractions. Unfortunately it`s noisy due to passing traffic and the beeping is especially annoying in the morning. The staff are friendly and a breakfast of bed and jam with tea or coffee is served. The toilets are clean and there`s hot water for showers. Dorms are comfortable and there are lockers too. The bar is a nice place to hang out in the evenings and meet people.

This is a good place to stay in beautiful Cuenca as it´s close to the historical centre and is cheap. It´s run by a young Swiss sister and brother team who speak both English and Spanish fluently. As well as the usual jam and bread breakfast you can also order extras. The building is large and there are ample toliets and showers with hot water. There is also a yard at the back where you can relax and a room where you can play beer pong. The beds are comfortable and lockers are provided.

This place isn´t really a hostel, it´s a house which rents out rooms. It´s biggest drawback is its location: it´s a good 20 minute walk from Charles Darwin Avenue or a 1 dollar taxi ride. (Most taxi drivers know how to get here as the property has a sign now). The family who runs this place are lovely but don´t speak English. My room was comfortable, well furnished and I had hot water too. There was also a TV in my room and the property was secure.

The biggest drawback with this place is its location as it´s a good 30 minutes walk from town up a steep hill. Saying that, it´s very peaceful and is ideal for those who wish to relax. This is a cosy hostel that attracts a chilled out crowd. The staff are lovely and helpful. I stayed in the 10 bed dorm which was cramped but comfortable. This is a classy hostel in an upscale area of Medellin. I wouldn't describe the hostel as homely as it's a bit posh, but the dorm rooms are comfortable and very clean. The bilingual staff are very helpful and professional. There's a breakfast of coffee, eggs and toast served in the morning and there is a laptop available for free use of the internet. If you love busy hostels with lots of opportunities to party, then you will love Lena`s. Bear in mind that this place is very loud as it is close to many nightclubs. This is a good place for a short stay in David. The interior of the hostel looks a bit tired but the dorms are comfortable and the bathrooms are clean. The owner is knowledgeable and has lots of info on the surrounding area. There is a computer for guest use (a bit unreliable), a kitchen and free coffee available all day. The hostel is about a 15 minute walk from downtown David but there is a handy supermarket nearby. There is also a courtyard and hammocks outside which are nice for chilling.

The only negative about this hostel is that there is only one bathroom for each gender. Everything else was excellent. It´s an ideal place for a quiet night in San Jose as it´s not a party hostel and it´s located in a nice barrio of the city. However, it´s only a short walk from the downtown area so its location is great. The interior of the hostel is quite elegant and the owner is very helpful and informative. The courtyard at the back is spacious and there´s a kitchen for guest use. Recommended.

I really liked the cosy vibe at this place. It is a short (but steep) walk from Montezuma town centre and the beach. The staff are lovely and the good breakfast they provide justifies the higher price as the local restaurants are expensive. The upstairs and downstairs areas are great for chilling out and there's a kitchen for guest use and free coffee all day. There is also a night watchman for extra security. This is a good place to stay in Liberia. It is very close to the bus station and security is excellent as the front gate is always locked. You need to be let in or out by a member of staff. There is a basic kitchen and pleasant courtyard at the back where you can relax or eat meals. Most people who stay here only stay for the night as they are either heading to or from the airport. The hostel is located in an upscale and safe area of Managua, close to expensive restaurants and bars. The staff speak good English and there are two computers for guest use, two kitchens and the swimming pool is a nice touch too. There doesn`t seem to be enough showers or toilets for the number of guests who stay in the dorms though. If you wish to explore downtown Managua you will need a taxi.

Hi, Thanks for providing us with your comments. In general we have 1 bathroom/shower for each dormitory of 8 people (in addition to the bathrooms inside the private rooms). This lies within the recommended ratios for the hosteling industry. Some of the dormitories have an en-suite bathroom, however, perhaps the dormitory you stayed in did not. Thanks again for your comments and we'll keep an eye on the situation with the bathrooms and ensure they are in kept good working order.

This hostel is a little pricey but it´s a good choice as the security is excellent and it is located in a good neighbourhood. It´s about a 20 minute walk to the downtown area. The dorms are clean and comfortable and there´s hot water for showers. The upstairs balcony is a nice place to chill out and there´s a tv downstairs but no common room as such. My only complaint about this place is that the hostel´s computer isn´t reliable and the internet is pricey at 2 dollars an hour.

This hostel is expensive but you are well looked after here. The owner, Marcos, speaks excellent English and takes guests out for nights out and arranges meals in the hostel on certain nights. The hostel also collects you or takes you to your next mode of transportation. The hostel is located in Zona 10, a safe but pricey part of the city. The best thing about this hostel were the staff. They were friendly, spoke excellent English and were very helpful. The place itself is a bit basic and the 5 bed dorm I was in was a little cramped but comfortable. The bathrooms were clean and there was some warm water during my stay. There is breakfast served every morning at around 9am. This is not the most centrally located hostel in Antigua but I would stay here again. Bear in mind that the hostel enforces a 12:30 am curfew.

Hostal Casa Luna, Coban, Guatemala

This was a pleasant place to spend a few days as it is close to Coban city centre. The male owner here speaks good English and is very friendly. The hostel itself is basic with few facilities (no internet, kitchen etc.) The beds are comfortable and the dorm I stayed in was spacious. Unfortunately there was no hot water at all during my stay and the rooms can get very chilly at night. Plan accordingly.

This is a chilled out hostel in a safe part of a rough city. Staff are very friendly and the balcony at the back is a great place to sink a beer and meet other backpackers. The hostel is also close to the tourist village and is in the city centre. However, the dorms are over priced and the walls between the rooms are thin.

I really liked this hostel as the staff were very friendly and they provided a great breakfast as well. Cinthia is a character and speaks great English. The dorms are comfortable and secure and air-conditioned. There's a basic kitchen for guest use and two computers for free internet surfing as well. The courtyard at the front of the hostel is a good place to chill with a beer. The hostel is close to Tulum high street where the bars, restaurants are etc. Highly recommended.

I really liked this hostel as it provided activities for the guests. I especially liked the free salsa lessons! The staff are helpful and speak excellent english. The dorms are comfortable and the pool is a nice bonus as well. The breakfast is quite good and there are 3 computers for free internet use. This isn't the most centrally located hostel in Merida but I would happily stay here again. Lockers are provided in the dorms as well.
