I never gave a 100% rating so far, and I will probably never do it again, but if there is a hostel which deserves that excellent assessment then it's the Casa del Sol. I cannot imagine that there is a better place to stay in Oaxaca. Thanks to its extremely kind and helpful staff, its cleanliness, its great breakfast, its amazing location in the city center, and its very nice green courtyard, the Casa del Sol is definitely among the class winners. Thank you for everything!
Well, the hostel is not what I would call charming, but it's worth the money Bill (the owner/manager) charges for it. The hostel as well as the neighborhood look a bit shabby and nagged, but there is everything you need, basically. A minus are the bathrooms. There are way to little bathrooms for all the people if the hostel is full. You can thus waste a lot of time waiting for a free shower. However, you can have a good time there if you are a frugal person regarding facilities and cleanliness.
It's the type of hostel that is only run for profit: the staff is unfriendly and rarely present, the internet was not working for a whole day and no one even tried to fix it, and they charged me 15$ extra because of 'late arrival' (5'), although there are no arrival times mentioned on Hostelworld.com. However, the house is decent and the hostel is close to Adams Morgan and the Dupond Circle neighbourhoods. Cleanliness and security (no lockers!) were ok.
Nice hostel with kind of a familiar atmosphere. The staff is friendly and tries to answer every question. A big plus was also the free barbecue that the manager prepared on sunday evening. Thanks man! Everything is very clean, but the rooms are small and stuffy. Unfortunately, the prices went up to more than 40 bucks a night during spring break. That is too much for a bed in a room with 12 other beds...
