SamS VIP Hostel San Gil

San Gil, Colombia

Fantastic hostel. Close to everything you need like good restaurants and shopping, a super friendly staff, and great organized tours -- do not miss paragliding over the canyon! The hostel is large with lots of different common areas and two fantastic kitchens to do your own cooking. The cleaning ladies are super sweet and keep everything sparkling. Plus you can get a massage at the hostel, perfect after a miserable day of riding buses to arrive in town! Highly recommend.

Colombian Dream Hostel

Bogota, Colombia

Little to no water in the bathrooms, no toilet paper, zero atmosphere. Wifi, location, and security are good, but there are better options.

TripOn Open House

San Jose, Costa Rica

Loved this place! It's pretty new so all the facilities are all in great shape. The staff is super friendly and helpful and the breakfast is AMAZING: cereal, toast, eggs, fresh fruit, and pancakes. It's a little away from the center but you can walk there in about 20 minutes and downtown San Jose isn't that great anyway. The mattress and pillows are fantastic, too. I would definitely come back here!

Theatre International Hostel

Guatemala City, Guatemala

Awesome hostel in Guate. Always felt safe, tasty pancake breakfast. The staff at the front desk, especially Pedro, are ridiculously awesome and friendly. The hostel is kept immaculate -- first place I've been to where I've walked into the bathroom and said "it smells great in here." The location is close to Parque Central and there's decent nightlife w/i walking distance. Big kitchen for preparing your meals. Stay here!

The Dreamer Hostel

Santa Marta, Colombia

Staying at Dreamer is like staying at a resort, not a hostel. The pool and outdoor area is gorgeous and so relaxing. I definitely spent entire days lying in a hammock reading. The owners are Italian, so the food coming out of the kitchen is delicious. Try the lasagna. While it's a bit far from downtown Santa Marta, the cab rides are cheap. There's also a convenient mall nearby to get groceries or enjoy some daytime aircon. Highly recommended.

U-Baan Guesthouse

Bangkok, Thailand

After all the great reviews about this hostel, I had really high hopes. Unfortunately, they weren't met. It's near the Sky Train but because none of the tourist sites are accessible by it, it's not as big a bonus as expected; we ended up having to cab or tuk tuk everywhere. There's not a real common area and the downstairs was really dirty; there was a McDonald's bag sitting there for our entire 4-night stay. Not easy to meet people, either. Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere.. anywhere.
