Ostello Bello

Milan, Italy

What's not to like?! Free drink on arrival, free dinner, free breakfast (including delicious eggs), awesome staff, lovely rooms, super comfy beds, great central location. The only thing I didn't like was that I was only staying one night and not for a lot longer. Fab - keep it up and I'll be back.

Black Sheep Hostel Medellin

Medellin, Colombia

Good, popular hostel in a great area. Had a private room en-suite which was great value for money and recommended if you want that little extra peace and quiet. The staff were helpful and organised a great Escobar tour. However, I'd recommend offering free milk to go with the tea bags - just a small touch that makes things a bit more comfortable. Great social areas and close to a local supermarket, so that's all a positive.

Loft Hostel

Reykjavik, Iceland

Second stay here and as excellent as the first. Such a great place to stay - the staff are really helpful and friendly, the facilities are great, including the ability to hire hairdryers and travel adaptors etc. Central location which makes it perfect for exploring the city. Would stay again.

United Backpackers

Melbourne, Australia

Excellent choice. Central, safe and comfortable. Great bar downstairs and huge kitchen area. My only suggestions would be; provide free tea and coffee at least for breakfast hours, even if not all day. Also provide hand soap in the en-suites - bit shocked not to find any! Only minor issues for an otherwise excellent choice - so much so I have booked to go back next time I am in Melbourne.

Reykjavik Downtown Hostel

Reykjavik, Iceland

This rating is for the Loft - which is a sister hostel of Downtown. Loft was incredible - warm, comfortable, clean, super helpful staff, excellent location, social bar with fun activities (but avoiding a party hostel atmosphere). I would totally stay here again. The only downside was that breakfast isn't included, but there is a supermarket really close by and good kitchen facilities in the hostel.

New York Budget Inn

New York, USA

This is a great option for New York. Located on 34th street, only 10 mins walk to 5th Avenue. Don't be fooled into thinking it is near Penn Station and walk from there with luggage - bad idea. The staff are really what make this place fantastic, as well as the large, warm dorm rooms, with security lockers, breakfast - even though it is only doughnuts and hot chocolate/coffee, and free pizza nights. The slight downside is the lack of big social area, kitchen and the paying for bag storage.

USA Hostels San Francisco

San Francisco, USA

One of the best hostels ever. Location is fantastic - near Union Square, the facilities are vast - laundry, book exchange, movie room, large kitchen, bar, pool table. Really a great place to meet people and chill out. Rooms are good - privacy screens on bed, own socket and light and security locker with a socket in it. Breakfast was also fantastic - good options, including pancakes. Have nothing bad to say about this place.

Princesa Maria

Banos, Ecuador

Lovely relaxing option. Located up a slight incline, but only a few minutes walk to the supermarket, bus station, banks, numerous shops and travel agencies, it benefits from quietness, while being close to everything. The hostel has a kitchen, which is great and a TV area, internet/wi-fi. Laundry can be arranged here. Owner only speaks Spanish. There is a great bakery near by, and not as many massage options as you may expect.

Community Hostel

Quito, Ecuador

Loved this hostel. The staff are fantastic - always available and super helpful. Ovi is fab - great at sorting out trips and local sightseeing and their driver is a real bonus for the long trip to the airport. Big, clean rooms, super comfy beds, awesome chefs in the form of Jason and Nic, who cook up amazing treats and meals. A great social atmosphere. The only caution is location. Very central - near the old town and market, but be careful at night. Only two bathrooms which can be a pain.

Banana's Adventure

Huacachina, Peru

Great social option and well suited to those that like to mix and party. The location is great (but nothing is far in Huacachina), and the facilities are good - there is a pool, which is delicious in the hot weather. Only downside is the music which is played all day long. Meals available and BBQ's every night. Private rooms, excellent options. More secure than the dorms. Complex is not very secure - accessible from street, but it never feels dangerous. Great cafe over road - Bamboo Cafe.

Nasca Trails B&B

Nazca, Peru

Juan and his family are wonderful hosts, and this is a great place to stay. The rooms are clean and excellent value for money (I had an double/en-suite), the breakfast, although additional cost, is really worth doing. It is served with flair and is very filling. Juan can help organise a flight over the lines - I really recommend doing it. The hostel is close to the centre - banks, a supermarket and restaurants. Also close to the bus terminal. Ask Juan about using pool at Nazca Lines Hotel.

Great place to stay. Located near the Plaza De Armas and next to a laundry (needed after Inca Trail), and not far from supermarket and excellent San Pedro market. Great facilities - en-suite rooms, large security lockers, breakfast included, on-site bar and restaurant, pool table, bag storage when on Inca Trail, hammock chill out areas. Good social atmosphere. Bedrooms are great - privacy screens on beds, own light and socket, thick douvet - good value.

Great option, a 5 minute walk to supermarket and main square. Very social hostel - tv rooms, outside areas, pool table. Kitchen facilities. Breakfast included. Laundry and trips to Colca Canyon can be arranged here. wi-fi and computers available. Considering it is so social, it does get quiet at 10pm because a lot of people go on trips very early in the morning. Did 3 day/2 night trip through hostel. Was good but 2 day option probably better. Secure luggage storage.

Hostal CasArte Takubamba

Sucre, Bolivia

Lovely safe, clean option just a few minutes walk from the main square. Located near the supermarket and a short walk to restaurants etc. The hostel has a kitchen and includes a delicious breakfast. Laundry can be arranged here. Private rooms are a great value option, as they come with an en-suite. Very secure, quieter option. It is not a party hostel. Wi-fi available.

Biergarten Hostel

Ilha Grande, Brazil

Great option! Victor, the owner, is friendly and super welcoming. The new rooms out the back, would be a bit quieter than the ones nearer the bar, but all the rooms are comfortable and include security lockers. There is a kitchen, laundry and computer, with wi-fi available (most of the time). The hostel is near the port, supermarkets and restaurants. It attracts a good mix of people, which gather at the lovely bar.

Sevilla Hostel One Centro

Seville, Spain

What a great place! Lovely old building, in a typical Sevillian square. Ariel was just so welcoming, relaxed, helpful and friendly that he really made my stay . My room was clean, spacious and comfortable . The hostel itself is only a 10 minute walk to all the main areas and as a single female I felt very safe walking around alone, even at night. Very happy stay, would definitely go back.

Manhattan Inn Hostel

New York, USA

The hostel needs more atmosphere, the corridors are very dull and the communal area is too small. I like the fact that the rooms have a TV, video and phone in them. This is excellent, but the rooms are too small for people and bags. It is a great location and the free breakfast is a bonus so all in all it was a pretty good stay. Could I recommend that when transport options are given for the hostel that they include Super Shuttle as this was a brilliant service.
