We decided to stay here because it was less expensive than other options, and we felt that the drawbacks mentioned by other reviewers would be worth it - such as shared bathroom, thin walls etc. In the end it was totally fine and a good spot for our week in Kyoto. Rooms are a bit small but we spent a lot of time out anyway. I recommend STRONGLY going to Cafe Sagan about five mins away for the most delicious salmon or bacon and eggs you've ever had for breakfast.

I'm always wary of hostels where all the reviews are like, 'It's perfect, you'll love it!' – but this place really is perfect and you'd be crazy not to stay here. Ana is a perfect host, full of excellent advice, & the rooms are clean, comfortable & stylishly decorated. We LOVED the breakfasts here, so much so that we kept pestering Ana for her recipes. The location is very safe & central, not far on foot or by metro to the Zocalo, Condesa & Roma. We loved it, & you will too.

Lovely staff, great location not far from Taksim with easy access to the old town (short walk or T1 tram). We switched to this side of town after spending our first few nights in Sultanahmet, and much preferred this location! Rooms and facilities are clean and nice.
You have such great taste to prefer this location over the old city! After all, who wants to be in Disney World all day & night? Sunny Regards from Karaköy, Your Portus Team

If you're looking for a place in the old town, this is a good option - close to everything and the guys are nice. Pro tip: take a cab from Ataturk rather than the shuttle, it'll be cheaper. Also, I would recommend only staying on the old town side for a couple of nights, and then switching to Beyoglu/Taksim side. It's much less touristy and there's a greater variety of restaurants and bars in the evenings (cheaper ones, too).

We stayed at Shantee House on the recommendation of a friend who visited six years ago, as it really made an impression on her! The only downside to staying here is that it's a little far from town, on the Buda side, rather than the more vibrant Pest side – but in the end that didn't bother us, as it was an easy 15-minute ride on the 49 tram into town (even though we went into town every night for dinner/drinks).

One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. We had a private room and it was clean, comfortable and had plenty of access to bathrooms. Bunk rooms looked pretty good too. Pedro's €10 dinners with three courses and all the wine you can drink is unbeatable both for price and deliciousness!
