Yawarmaki Hotel

Great place but the real asset is Rachel, who runs the place. She's an absolute star, totally lovely and really went out of her way to help us with anything we needed. Location is great, 5 minute walk to Plaza de Armas, loads of little restaurants and bars around. Great value for money and Rachel really made us feel at home. When we arrived from Machu Pichu all wet and tired, she brought tea up to our room!

Not impressed. It's in a decent enough location but other than that, not very good. Staff were a killer really - utterly useless, couldn't even add up how much we owed them for three nights. Took them ages to do anything. Breakfast was poor, no options for tours etc that you'd expect from a place in Ecuador. Room was nice but overpriced, and you get loads of noise from the road outside. The room was also up four flights of steps which was a real pain. Don't bother.

Art Beach Hostel Búzios

Buzios, Brazil

Best hostel I've stayed at in South America so far. Lovely place, great staff who fall over themselves to help. Buzios is a pretty chilled place but that's exactly what we wanted, and we had a great time. We actually went back to Art Beach Hostel after moving to another place to try out another area, and spent 8 nights there in total. Couldn't recommend it more.

Turning Point Hostel

Good points - 1. Andre, the American guy working there was really lovely, 2. they let us check in early when our bus arrived at 7am and 3. the location is great. Bad points - most other things. The place was pretty much filthy, kitchen and bathrooms especially. The kitchen being ¨fully equipped¨ is a joke, one pan to use and a few dirty plastic plates. The staff (besides Andre) were surly and unwelcoming and spent their time sitting around. Showers in the private rooms are terrible as well.

Ventana Sur Hostal

We had a great stay here, definitely recommend it. Ivan and the staff are lovely, very homey place. Not a party hostel, but that might have been the time of year. The room was great, bed was superb, nice having a TV in the private room. The shower wasn't amazing but did the job, Location is good - it's a 10 minute walk from the middle of town but that's good, middle of Santago is a bit grotty. LIttle restaurants and supermarket within easy walking distance
