A rare jewel. A warm, funky, almost-new hostel that richly deserves the formidable reputation it has built up in its first few months of operation. Much of the credit for that success lays with Jo-Jo, the owner and hands-on manager who ensures that standards are maintained and that your stay is comfortable and rewarding. Its like staying in a friend`s house - I enjoyed it so much I changed my plans and stayed for another 3 days . An outstanding hostel experience.
My first two nights in Taipei and I seriously doubt if any other hostel on Taiwan will be able to match the standards set by the Star Hostel. I have used hostels all over the world and can say with some conviction that the Star really is in a class of its own. The attention to detail is pitch perfect, the decor is jaw dropping and all of the staff are young, personable and anxious to ensure that your stay is comfortable and enjoyable. Simply outstanding.
Sparkling clean and conveniently located, the Otavalo Prince really does the job for a one or two night stay in the market town of Otavalo. Good value for money. Strongly recommended.
If you are looking for a quiet, clean and convenient hostel in Quito with spacious dorms, a well-appointed kitchen, hot showers and a warm and inviting atmosphere then you really need to look no further than the Revolution. All of this is carefully orchestrated by the owner, the indomitable Sandra, who will recognise you by name, introduce you to other travellers and quietly ensure that your time in Quito is both enjoyable and rewarding. Outstanding value for money. Strongly recommended.
Outstanding in every respect. Just concluded an awesome 6-night hostel stay -exceptionally clean and modern, spacious and well-appointed four.bed dorm, well-equipped kithens, spacious lounges, fast internet terminals, a media room for watching TV or running movies (that one's a first for me) and finally, exceptionally kind and helpful reception staff (take a huge bow, Carolina !). Excellent location and really good value for money. Strongly recommended.
If you are looking for a good, solid, no-frills stay slap-bang in the middle of the Historical Centre then you really need to look no further than the Genovese. Its a small family-run hostel and the folks there work tirelessly to keep the place in shape. The big draw (and the big bonus) is the kidney-shaped wallowing pool and the rooftop terrace - both huge plusses in a city that can get really hot and humid. Good value for money. Recommended.
I used up a lot of superlatives in describing the Masaya Bogota in an earlier review but this one, the Masaya Santa Marta, is in an utter class of its own. Hotel-quality facilities, an army of cleaners, wipers and polishers working until late at night, personable and attentive reception staff, good dorms, an excellent kitchen, endless shady patios and lounges and, best of all, two plunge pools to cool off and chill out. I doubt if hostelling gets better than this anywhere.
Some exceptional ratings here for an exceptional hostel experience in an historic building tucked away in the Candelaria quarter of Bogota. The flagstone courtyards and patios only add to the character and relaxed atmosphere of the whole hostel and the staff work very hard to ensure that you are informed, engaged and get a very real taste of genuine Colombian hospitality. Outstanding.
Good solid stay in a good solid hostel that deserves its top-shelf reputation. Mid-winter is barely the best time to judge the vibe and atmosphere of a city hostel but it had a warm and agreeable feel even though there were less than a dozen guests using the hostel while I was there. Is very well appointed with generous size lounges and dining area but a few more kitchen utensils, plate ware and cutlery certainly wouldn`t go amiss. Would certainly return and recommend it to others.
Everynow and then you stumble over a place where they really ´get it´. The Russafa is one of those rare places - a really neat and quiet hostel located close to Valencia Nord and Valencia JSO Stations. Generous-sized rooms, crisp white linen, hotel-quality mattresses, eclectic decor, spotless bathrooms and a super-solid breakfast (try real cold meats and fresh baguettes) all add up to a superior hostel experience at everyday nuts-and-bolts prices. Highly recommended.
From the moment you step into the impressive foyer of No. 59 Gran Via you know that this is a bit special. Its a small quiet hostel that comes with generously proportioned rooms, spotless bathrooms, crisp white linen, a solid breakfast and fast internet connections. Staff are relaxed and efficient and the owner/manager is there on-site for much of the day. A great hostel experience - amongst the best I have had in the whole of Spain. Highly recommended.
An exceptional rating for an exceptional hostel. Everynow and then you stumble over a hostel that ´has got it right´ and the the Barbieri Granada certainly has that: incomparable location a short walk from most of the majors, excellent attentive staff, good on-board facilities and clean clean clean. An excellent stay in a magical city. Can´t recommend the Barbieri (or Granada come to that) too highly . . . .
Returned to the Lisboa after a whirlwind 8 day rip around Morocco to find the same courtesy, the same cleanliness, the same attention to detail and the same high standards of service excellence. I stand by my previous review - this place is a gem and richly deserves its hard-won reputation. 11/10.
This place is an absolute gem. From being just a one-night flop before getting the ferry over to Tangier; it became one of the highlights of my whole trip. The Lisboa Hostal could not be better or more conveniently located - the rooms are kept spotlessly clean and the staff are as warm and friendly as I have met anywhere. This family owned and managed hostal is one of the best I have stayed in and it richly deserves its fine reputation. Can't recommend it too highly.
Exceptional in every respect. Rarely do you find a hostel that offers such excellent accomodation and superb facilities in such a quiet and convenient location. The rooms and bathrooms are spotlessly clean and the fully-equipped kitchen would be more at home in a showroom than in a hostel. All of this is a tribute to the tireless cleaning staff and the hands-on managers who personally go out of their way to ensure that you enjoy all that Lagos and the surrounding coast has to offer. 10/10.
An excellent base from which to explore Amsterdam - clean, convenient and, by Amsterdam standards, good value for money. What makes this place special is the exceptionately friendly and helpful Monica. Many thanks for a great stay !
With some hostels you know within minutes of arriving that you`ve made a good decision. You get that sensation when you come to Tiare Village. Its a warm funky and convenient hostel, ideally located for access to Rarotonga Airport and within easy walking distance of the town centre. Its clean and functional with a casual relaxed atmosphere and a friendly efficient staff who all work hard to ensure that your stay is comfortable and enjoyable. I`d go back in a heartbeat.
First-class YHA hostel in a sensational setting, literally within the shadow of Mt Cook . Furnishings, fittings and resources are of the usual high standard with generous size bedrooms and a more-than-adequate kitchen. Ideally situated for the Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre and a number of easy-to-difficult treks into the slopes and valleys that surround the hostel. I doubt whether there is a hostel with a better view than this one. Plug it into your plans and you won't regret it . . .
Everynow and then you stumble over a backpackers that has got it just right. Bumbles is one of those rare places - centrally located, generous size dorms with ensuite washroom/shower, top-shelf furniture and fittings, fresh bed linen and a modern lounge that gives you panoramic views of the lake. Lob in a nice casual atmosphere, hard-working cleaning staff and competent hands-on management and you have a very good hostel indeed., Can't recommend it too highly.
Stellar backpackers, located on the lake front and within a short walk to the town centre and the Inter-City bus stop. Really generous size 4-bed dorms with a washroom en suite - a well equipped kitchen and decent lounge and internet facilities. The place is spotless (hats off there to the cleaning staff and the hands-on management team) and very very good value for money. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Dunedin is not a place that is on too many people's bucket lists but if you are here or just passing through then I'd strongly recommend staying a couple of nights at the Manor House Backpackers. A 15 minute walk from the Octagon in the town centre and a bit of tug from the Inter-City bus terminal, its a funky atmospheric hostel that offers a good vibe, generous sized dorms, adequate washroom facilities, strong hands-on management and really good value for money. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
More of a home-stay than a hostel or, to put it another way, all of comforts of home at hostel prices. The location is as close as you are likely to get to the city core and the (newly sited) Inter-City Main Bus Stop. Its very well equipped home, warm, comfortable, blissfully quiet and is kept spotlessly clean by a very hard-working owner/manager. Its easy to find and difficult to fault. I'd go back tomorrow.
Centrally located high-turnover hostel catering for singles, couples and large groups but still a top-notch hostelling experience. Good cooking facilities , generous dorm space, excellent lounges, internet facilities and helpful staff. Ideal for a 2-3 day layover in Wellington. Helpful early morning shuttle to the InterIslander ferry terminal.
Everynow and then you come across a hostel that's got it right. Fabulously convenient location, sparkling like a new pin, a well-equipped kitchen, a very relaxed atmosphere and just a neat place to use as a base or curl up with a good book and look out at the ocean. Come back ? In a heartbeat.
Top shelf hostel in a prime location. Helpful friendly staff, good facilities, spotlessly clean, good atmosphere. . Staff deserve every congratulation for running such an exemplary place. I'd go back tomorrow.
Its a fair way from the centre of town with a heavy backpack but once you are there the walk is more than worth it. Its a neat little place, spotlessly clean, good value for money and does the job for the short time you are likely to be in Whittianga. Margaret, the owner/manager is an absolute treasure and she and her staff work very hard to ensure that you enjoy your stay and take advantage of the many local sights and attractions. I'd go back tomorrow . . .
A stellar review for a stellar hostel. Located in an outer suburb of Auckland but conveniently positioned for any number of local and express buses, Pentlands offers a really superior hostel experience. The staff are welcoming and helpful, the facilities are top-shelf and the place is actually cleaner than my house. This one goes to an 11.
This is a real nuts-and-bolts hostel ideal for a night or two if you have just arrived or are shortly departing from Colombo International Airport. Its clean, its comfortable, the staff really care and its really very good value for money.
I'm not in the habit of writing puffy reviews but I will certainly make an exception in this case. The Mewargarh Palace has been one of my accommodation highlights on a trip across the whole of India: its very clean, very comfortable and very convenient; the roof-top restaurant is excellent and very good value for money. The whole family works very hard from morning to night to ensure that your stay is both enjoyable and comfortable. By any standards this is an 11/10.
Every now and then you come across a hostel that has really ´got it´. The El Momento is really exceptional - a beautiful classic courtyarded building, generous-sized dorms with wide sprung mattresses and personal bedside fans, wonderfully attentive staff and an in-hostel cafe-restaurant that punches out drinks and some excellent food at really competitive prices. It is, without doubt, one of the best hostels I´ve stayed in in Central America. I would go back in a heartbeat.
Hostal Cumbres del Volcan is exceptional. Located in a safe residential neighbourhood within a $5.00 cab ride to most parts of the city, its a cool, generously proportioned, spotlessly clean hostel with an excellent kitchen and lounges, dining areas and patios large enough to meet and interact with other travelers. Above all its the staff that make this place what it is - friendly, ever helpful and great ambassadors for the country of El Salvador. I would go back in a heartbeat.
Although it may be light on frills and bells and whistles, the Sotz Hostel scores heavily in most of the important areas of interest to backpackers and budget travelers. Aside from a welcome absence of Bob Marley records, it is blissfully quiet, hellishly convenient, spotlessly clean, monastery safe and very good value for money. The two (very) personable hosts are clearly working very hard to become established and they richly deserve sharing their home-like hostel with a wider clientele.
An excellent hostel, conveniently positioned within easy walking distance of central Antigua. Good clean facilities, a relaxed atmosphere and an ever-helpful staff go to make a truly memorable stay. I´d go back in a heartbeat.
For a one or two night stay on the Isla de Flores to visit the lake or Tikal, La Mesa de los Mayas Hotel will certainly do the job. Its ideally located, the rooms are clean and safe and there is an OK downstairs restaurant attached to the hotel. By local standards its more than reasonable. Would I return ? Yes I would.
Every now and then you come across a hostel that actually lives up to its hard earned reputation for excellence. Atlantic Point is simply in a class of its own: its blissfully quiet, extremely spacious, spotlessly clean, well appointed with a staff who are genuinely interested in ensuring that your stay is both productive and enjoyable. This is one of those rare places where they have actually 'got it right' and they richly deserve their continued success. I'd go back in a heartbeat . . .
Its not often I go to an 8/8 on a hostel reference but I'll happily do that after two very comfortable days and nights at the Kalulu Backpackers in Lusaka. The hostel is clean, comfortable and within reasonable (daylight) walks to shopping malls, markets, post offices, banks and ATM's. The staff at every level fall over themselves to be helpful and to make your stay both enjoyable and memorable. And did I mention that they put together the best breakfast burgers in Africa?
A good solid hostel ideally located within a short walk of the main Hiroshima Station. Good value for money for a short stay. Really helpful staff and good-oh on-site facilities. Would I use it again ? You bet.

A richly deserved reputation for quality hostel accomodation within easy access of Wenclesas Square, bus and metro connections. Modern decor, spotlessly clean and, for central Prague, very good value for money. Would return again in a heartbeat.
It's a nonsense to call this place a hostel. The decor, comfort and attention to detail is nothing short of staggering. In all my years of travelling I have never yet stayed in a hostel that puts out cotton buds in the bathroom, toothpicks in the dining room or a provides complimentary stationary materials in the lounge. This is a boutique hostel geared to a mature non-partying clientele who value comfort over grot, elegance over utility and Mozart over Marley. It is simply outstanding.
If you are looking for a quiet, relaxed hostel within striking distance of both sides of the Falls then you need look no further than the Hostel Bambu. Located in a quiet residential neighbourhood on major bus routes and within a short walk to the Bus Station, the Bambu is convenient, clean, safe and very good value for money. Natalie and a team of dedicated staff really go out of their way to ensure that you have all the advice/information you need to have a really memorable falls experience
