Location is good and the place is quite new, but I'm sad to say the 6-bed dorm was the dirtiest hostel room I've met in Europe. The bed linen was okay, but the floor was covered with dust, sand and pieces of paper. The toilet floor and sink were full of hair and dirt. I imagine this can't be the normal situation but must have happened by oversight; anyway, I don't dare to recommend the place to anyone. Btw, the left-luggage room is subject to a charge and you can pay only with Swedish coins.

Friends Hostel, Rome, Italy

The hostel was actually called Lilliput. Close to the Central railway station but still a peaceful location. Very clean. We were on the 1st floor where there were three rooms and a tiny common area. I chose the place because it advertised the possibility to pay with credit card, but finally only cash was accepted, as so often in Rome! The beds were the biggest problem: the wire grid was loosened, so you were sleeping practically in a deep valley. Btw, the wifi worked well on the 1st floor.

Location is good, though not so good you might think. At A&O you always know what you get: no surprises, which is nice. You sleep well even in the dorm if all the other guests also want to sleep :) The only thing I was a bit worried about was that the lock room door didn't get locked if not pushed - and they also opened it (remotely) for anyone without asking his/her name and room number. Btw they could also invest in broader and less transparent curtains...

Nice basic hotel with excellent but still peaceful location near to the main railway station, the Circumvesuviana station and the old town. There was, however, no air-conditioning at least in my room although they say the contrary. Payments only in cash. The staff was very nice and the rooms clean. Also a basic Italian breakfast on the patio.

Good location: only a 10-min walk to Place Capitole, two supermarkets, metro, and airport shuttle bus stop nearby. The rooms are basic except that there is a mini kitchen included. (I personally wouldn't like anyone cooking in my room.) The beds are unexpectedly good: they don't creak as bunk beds often do. Two problems: 1) having shower makes the whole room damp (the hood doesn't help); 2) the basement dorm has a window opening to the street which is quite noisy. Bring your own ear plugs.

A standard A&O hostel with easy check-in, clean rooms and rather-close-to-the-railway-station location. To the historical center the distance is however considerably longer. The only thing that I found annoying was that the curtains let practically all the light into the room. When they change the curtains next time, they could invest in a thicker fabric.

Very good value for money - actually they gave me a better room than I had reserved. Good location near the metro L5 station Chueca and not far from Gran Via and the centre. The building would certainly need restoration, but everything was clean (except the towels in front of the shower cabins) and worked. In the twin room there wasn't lockers, but in the dorms there may be.

Very clean and nice, not noisy though the place is located by a larger street. The walking time to the old time is however longer than 15 minutes: 20 to the Plaza de Espana and about 30 to La Seo. We think this pension was well worth of money.

Good location, not too expensive; nothing special to complain except the poor draining in the showers: you have to stand up to your ankles in water. And another thing: the wifi does not work in the rooms and you have to sign in with your fb credentials... The breakfast was actually better than we expected (ham included), but it could have begun earlier than 8.30 (Sundays 9.30)! Btw, don't leave the windows open at night because there are tiny mosquitos that bite nastily.

Hostel Old Plovdiv, Plovdiv, Bulgaria

16th Dec 2013

One of the best hostels I have ever been to. More like a hotel but still intimate and cozy with all the antique furniture etc. The staff is helpful and sympathetic. The hostel is in the very heart of historical Plovdiv but you find it easily from the modern main street. By car it is a bit harder as there is only one entry into the old town. One of the many nice details was a special heater in the bathroom. If they want to be even more perfect, they could consider upgrading to thicker curtains :)

Good place in the very heart of Varna. The staff was helpful and the really colourful interior unique. I guess the artistic shabbiness is part of the brand. Many reviewers have complained about the shower plus toilet combination (everything gets wet), but as there are several bathrooms, the problem can be resolved by using only one of them for having shower.

Nice hostel in superb town. Helpful staff, good breakfast, basic okay dorm room. Central in the old town but possibly hard to locate if you're coming from the modern town. In the winter, the unheated spaces, e.g. toilets and bathrooms, get pretty cold, but this is how it seems to work in Bulgaria. The only real problem is, however, that in the dorm there are no curtains that would hinder the lovely morning sun from shining in at seven. In general, very good value for money.

Good place, helpful staff, breakfast simply excellent. The following is about the single room that is actually located in an apartment about 100 m away, in Alabin street. As a whole, the room was nice though the bed was a bit hard. The problem was, however, that Alabin street is used by several tram lines. This, together with the fact that Bulgarians don't like curtains, made me wake up at 6 o'clock when the trams began to operate. But if you are a good sleeper, don't hesitate to book this room!

Good location (use public transport), excellent breakfast, POD beds in the dorms nice but there are still problems with them. At St Christopher's Canal Inn, the problem was that the under-bed lockers creaked; at Gare du Nord they have fixed this, but here the curtains make a terrible noise when pulled; the beds also shudder when someone rolls over. The showers worked well but the bathrooms were ill-smelling and could be cleaner; the cleaners a bit halfhearted. I recommend the online check-in.

Very clean and very comfortable: maybe the best B&B’s I’ve ever stayed at. The owners are most friendly and helpful and know everything about Florence. The breakfast is an Italian one with wholemeal toast and cheese. Practically the only problem is that you can hear the other guests talking in the corridor. Besides, there could be some pegs on the wall for coats. About the location: the area is nice and quiet, but be prepared to walk a lot or take a bus. Nevertheless, excellent value for money!

Excellent value for money, well-equipped kitchen, clean showers, very good location near the U-Bahn station – but actually you don’t need public transport, because the central sights are really within walking distance. The only problem is that the rooms are small and without any ventilation. That’s why it gets extremely hot at night, which is not eased by the fact that the blanket seemed to be of synthetic fibre. Besides, I hope that the owner remembers to change the door code every now and then

We stayed only for one night, so we cannot say much about the place. On the whole, everything was working and looked new. The shower and the toilet inside the dorm room were clean. The curtain in front of the window was however practically transparent, so the room bathed in light in the morning. Besides, there was a noisy roadway nearby. Btw, the railway station is not so close to the hostel as you might imagine.

The location is good: in the Medina and near to the train station. Clean and new, although they didn't clean the room or empty the dust bin during our stay. A clean, nice and functional - and professionally run - hostel. I lived in a 12-person dorm and felt comfortable even there. A functional hostel with a good location and helpful staff. The curtains over the beds give you some privacy even in the dorms. The breakfast was nice, too. The only problems were with the lockers under the beds: they don't lubricate them so they screech terribly (like the doors as well!) and even though they say that you can bring your own padlock for the lockers, you really need a huge padlock (at least 5 cm) to get the locker closed.

The staff was very helpful and nice. Unfortunately, the place was difficult to find and the road leading there (Via degli Olivi) was extremely narrow and tricky to drive. So, if you aren't used to driving in Italy, don't try it. Second, the place is further away from the centre than they promise. The room was clean and cozy.

A very nice and clean place. The owner was helpful and e-mailed me even a map on Wadi Mousa beforehand.

The owner was nice and competent but especially the toilets and showers were dirty.

The owners were kind and very helpful and drove us to the Orio al Serio airport at 7 in the morning. The place is clean, even a bit luxurious and quiet though it is situated in the very heart of the Old town.
