Arenal Backpackers Resort

Stayed in the tents and it was definitely a great value. With four of us in one tent, however, apparently there wasn't room for bed frames but the mattresses on the floor were very good quality and comfortable. Noise was a bit of an issue, with the bar/reception music playing loud and clear through the canvas until 11p.m. My only other complaint would be the lack of benches or hooks in the shower rooms -- hard to keep things dry without leaving them outside. Beautifully maintained property.

A lush little get-away spot. Not in the center of Puerto Viejo, but a few minutes walk gets you in to the beach and the main drag. A taxi from the bus stop helps with luggage, especially in the Caribbean heat. Plentiful hammocks as well as free eggs and coffee for breakfast - for those who like Italian style moka-made espresso!

breakfast pancakes were great and the kitchen staff worked hard to keep up with the high number of guests during a holiday week. I would say beware of trying to get AC though I see they've changed their room description to better reflect the situation. Despite choosing the Deluxe Twin Private Room which (when I booked) was listed as "With ensuite bathroom and AC", we arrived to find that TURNING ON the AC cost an additional 15 dollars a night for 11 hours of AC.

It was clean and cheerful enough (bright paint, etc.) , but everything from the mattresses (little padding over the springs, creaky) to the wi-fi, to the space/storage were very low-quality. With only a few guests staying the same night, it was fine, but imagine that "full capacity" would be overwhelming to the facilities. Better value for your money could probably be got elsewhere though if you're in a bind, or just passing through, it's a decent enough place to stay.

Stayed mid-week, 2 nights, traveling alone. Was nicely put in an all-female dorm room though I don't think I'd specified that preference in my reservation. Also, the 24-hour staff was great -- i had to check out at 3:30 am for a flight. The place seemed like a great cheap stay for the young traveler. Wednesday night karaoke was quite a party with free beer and music till late into the night. Free breakfast and pasta were much appreciated for the budget-conscious. Best for those who value a party atmosphere
