This hostel was amazing. I had such a good time. Even though on a map it looks a bit out of the way, the area which it is in, Lincoln Park, is fantastic - it is the real Chicago. Best staff out of any hostel I've been to.
It's a nice place in a pretty good location. It's clean - mostly due to the zealous enforcement of the no shoes policy. So if that's all you care about, great! Stay here! But. Rooms are substandard, packing in as many beds as you can in tiny, very horrible rooms (4-share has the furnace, no windows and feels a bit like a cupboard). There is no life in this hostel, it's very much a place to sleep.
Found out that it is possible for hostels to be too big! While the getting to know you events were good the size of the hostel is a bit daunting. Don't think this would have been a problem though if the staff were a bit more friendly. Very clean. About a 20 minute sub ride downtown. A good place I stay if you're with friends.
Had a fantastic time at this hostel. Staff were amazing, mostly native Montrealers so they had a fantastic knowledge of the city. The downstairs cafe/bar was also awesome, so easy to meet other travelers. Was a bit disappointed some activities were cancelled.
The novelty of the hostel being in a old jail wares off as soon as you need to start using the facilities. The hostel is falling apart, literally. There is almost zero security. It is hard to sleep because off creaking in the building. Bathrooms are sub-standard. The bar is great though and the open mic night was fantastic. The above are pretty simple things to fix and can add a lot to the experience. A complete renovation will make sure the novelty sticks around for the whole stay.
Really good place to stay. Rooms are excellent, some of the best I've come across.
