Mama Waldy Hostel

Cartagena, Colombia

Pretty basic hostel, but can be a good vibe depending on who's in. Always a lot of people around (friends of staff etc.), so a bit of a weird vibe. Pretty basic facilities (no shower heads or hot water, booked AC room but given room with fan only...) but was sufficient. In summary, my stay was fine, but I might try my luck elsewhere next time I'm in Cartagena.

Great experience at Sunflower. Easy walk or bus into the centre, close to restaurant and bar options. Clean rooms, good wifi. Staff were excellent, helping me find another place to stay when I got sick and needed somewhere to rest up for a few days. Would definitely recommend.

Great experience here. Feels like staying at a friend's house with a bunch of other people rather than in a hostel. Joe the manager was a helpful and friendly guy, and everything you wanted was there including a bunch of movies, fresh bread at breakfast. Would definitely recommend to others visiting.

Above a pub, but a pretty quiet one and an easy work to the tube and some good bus lines, however might recommend a more central location for first-timers to London. Run by very friendly and helpful folk. No lockers in room (only additional small ones for rent downstairs in the pub), and a bit run-down, but not a bad option.

Ani & Haakien - Rotterdam

Rotterdam, Netherlands

Overall impression was just that the whole place was a little disorganised. Friendly enough people, but had a few issues - had continual problems with wifi, always took about 15 minutes trying until my computer would finally connect, there were 12 beds in the dorm but only 10 lockers, and the electronic showers just didn't work one day. Still, this is in a very easy location near the train station, and there is a very chilled-out vibe, so I hope they can work out the niggles.

Two small concerns - wifi doesn't work in the rooms, and no lockers as of yet, but this is a new hostel that is definitely aiming to please, so I'm sure they will get onto these soon. The most spacious dorm I've ever stayed in, clean, professional, and in a quiet part of town that is easily walkable to everything. Would definitely stay again if returning to Haarlem.

Thanks Mark for the review! Lockers will definitely be applied very soon, still on our 'just opening to-do list' The WiFi signal shouldn't even work in the rooms. This is our choice as we enjoy having our guests in the common living area and on the sunny patio. Thanks for staying and hope to see you again in Haarlem!

Hostel Van Gogh

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Rooms were modern like a hotel. Lacks any real common areas to relax, so meeting other travelers is limited to those in your rooms, probably suits groups better than individuals. Other main problem was the electronic lockers in the room, which I has continual troubles with trying to lock, and can be obnoxiously loud when opening and closing if people are sleeping. I would suggest going back to standard lockers with padlocks.

In a fairly good spot in Belgrade, with good facilities (internet, hot water, kitchen etc.), and staff willing to help out with questions. Seems popular with groups, so convivial atmosphere was a bit lacking, and the dorm room itself was a bit disorganised but that may have just been the time I was there and the random roommates I drew. Groups also appeared to be split across different rooms which could be improved to reduce disturbances across rooms with night returns etc.

Indeed, not exactly well signposted, and the manager is around sporadically rather than there all the time. Still, it appears that he tries to meet most people as they arrive at the bus station (walk towards town and take the first left, it's on that street, above a small supermarket if he doesn't meet you). Room was basic but clean, with good AC, internet that worked most of the time, and the manager is friendly and helpful when there.

A good cheap choice in Jaipur. Staff were friendly and helpful (even being able to track down a missing item from the laundry), internet was good (although only worked at the front). Only real issue we had was our room had no ventilation and as such felt damp, I imagine the more expensive rooms nearer the front don't have this problem. Oh, and all rooms are 'doubles', not 'twins'. Perfectly fine for a few days stay though :) Would recommend.

In a word: overpriced. For $145 per person per night in a twin room, we could've stayed in a much nicer basic hotel. We had a leak in the corner of our room which ruined a new handbag my friend had bought during the night and there were other little things wrong (WiFi didn't work in room, room next to elevator was very loud, no eggs/pancakes at breakfast as stated on the advert, no shower head, leaky shower) that I could tolerate if it wasn't so expensive. Pros: Close location for the bus station and friendly staff. Cons: Twin room we booked turned out to be a double, and the bathrooms, while clean could do with some improvements (need to reach into the wall to flush the toilet!). With a bar downstairs it was noisy through to 2am on a Thursday night, with what seemed to be friends of the operators rather than visitors. Breakfast included a broken toaster and mouldy cake. In short, this place has a lot of potential but I wouldn't stay again as is.

Overall, a good hostel. Friendly and helpful staff and in a pretty easy location near Hidalgo station, and walkable to most sights (for me at least!). The one thing I found odd was the need to reset your card key each day for your room which was done without any checks from staff members I hadn't met. There weren't many people staying when I was there so it wasn't an issue, but this seemed to be a bit of a loophole of security. Overall, pleased with my stay though!

Pretty standard fare hostel - but certainly not anywhere as nice as the hostels I'd stayed elsewhere in Japan (maybe it's just Tokyo?). On the positive side, good beds, nice location, friendly staff and some of the best hostel rates in Japan! However, without a lounge (it's been sacrificed for a bar on the ground floor, which also made it feel less secure) it felt less social, and those staying seemed to be more on the dirtier side. But all in all, a pretty normal hostel experience.

Only here for a night, but sufficed for my brief stay in Montreal. This place is run pretty strictly on rules (no alcohol, no cooking outside of 5-8pm etc.), and hence has a bit of an uptight feel to it. But the rooms were nice, the location nice on the park so a perfectly fine stay.

I was expecting a dive after reading the reviews, but had no issues with my stay here. Close to the metro stop, friendly staff and good sized room. The only thing missing was lockers in the room. Be advised, this is one of the rowdiest hostels I've stayed in so if you're looking for somewhere quiet, I'd look elsewhere!

Adequate hostel. Nothing to write home about and nothing really to complain about it. Would not be good for the safety anxious as you aren't given a room/front door key, they are just left open and manned by a 24hr reception, but no complaints otherwise.

You're paying a little more here than in any other hostel in Croatia, but if you value a good location in the Old Town, you'll pay it. Well-run hostel with friendly staff, good sized rooms and a good vibe.

Old Town Hostel

Hostel is in an excellent location to explore the Old Town of Zadar. Hostel is a bit cramped though with no common room, so nowhere to hang out in the hostel other than in your room, which at least was a good size.

Couldn\'t be more happy with this hostel - Gordana was amazing, providing food, a wealth of information and even ringing the tourist information place where I was moving onward to make sure that I had made it! A nice good location, easily walkable out of the city centre and a big, clean and livable hostel. Highly recommended!
