Ashanti Lodge Gardens

Cape Town, South Africa

Hostel has great character - loved the cafe and bar where a lot of people hung out. Cheap drinks and great food for a hostel. It's in a nice part of town a little out of the city centre - about a 10 minute walk to Long street. Lots of good restaurants close by too and a travel centre in the reception area where you can book tours in and out of town.

Meramees Hostel

Cairo, Egypt

The hostel is in downtown Cairo and right next door is a mosque, so if you are a light sleeper bring ear plugs, unless you want to be woken up at 4am to the early morning prayer! The hostel was ok for cleanliness although there were ants in our room, and despite the promise of air conditioning, this did not work. So it was extremely hot in the room. Staff were very welcoming and helpful, pointing us in the right direction for markets, taxis etc and there is free airport pick up.
