Pretty good location - not far from King's Cross Station - and fairly cheap for London, especially considering it included breakfast. My main criticism would be that the dorm I was in was pretty tiny for eight people. But I guess you get what you pay for, and it was still clean and secure. Be sure to BYO towel and lock, though!

Having travelled for a while, Majdas Hostel was a comfortable treat - a real "home away from home" with nice big social spaces both inside and outside, and super-friendly staff who gave great advice about things to see around town, and were good company in general.

I found that the location was a bit of a walk away from the main attractions, but what this place lacks in location, it makes up for in character (and it's still walking distance from the old quarter - just not in the middle of it!) The owner was super-friendly and keen to help with a map and advice, and was able to organise a tour. Otherwise, it was clean with plenty of space to hang out in - though the walls between dorms are thin, so bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper...

Swanky Mint, Zagreb, Croatia

I loved this place - one of the nicest hostels I've been in. I stayed in a single room, which suited my needs. It was even available when I arrived early after an overnight flight, which was appreciated. Staff were super-nice, both at reception and the bar. Whilst this is slightly pricier than your average hostel (thus the "Swanky"), coffee and drink prices discounts at the bar were reasonable, and it had a super-cool vibe. I'd definitely stay here again!

A pretty standard youth hostel - an interesting rotating crowd of backpackers, and very friendly and helpful staff. Pros: Location - halfway between the station and the Old Quarter. Super-helpful staff. Inexpensive dorm beds. Nice big lockers Cons: Needed to provide own locks for lockers. Had shower whilst holding onto a button so the water didn't shut off. Had to pay extra for towels. Of course, you get what you pay for, and this was still great value and comfortable stay.

I have to admit, I came here because I was on a tight budget. The staff were helpful, and the place was clean and secure, but it wasn't the most sociable of places. Maybe I was just here on a quiet day. It's also a bit of a traverse from the centre of town. That said, I was still very comfortable, and for Switzerland, the price isn't too bad compared to the cost of many other places.

This is one of the three major backpacker hostels right next to the central station. I have to admit that I only came here because I needed a night in a private room after having stayed in dorms for a week. I'd describe it as cheap and cheerful - breakfast was included which was a bonus. The location is fantastic. The bar downstairs is definitely lively. As long as you don't mind simple furnishings in an older building, you won't have a problem with this place.

It seems that Yoho is something of a backpacker institution in Salzburg. With its daily screenings of The Sound of Music, cheap and filling meals, and a fun bar for meeting people, I had a very comfortable stay over the two nights that I spent in Salzburg. It's close to the main station, and 15 minutes walk from the old town . Rooms are secure with keycard-accessible lockers, and the beds were clean.

So, this was the more upmarket of the three major hostels next to central station - and I would definitely stay here again. With secure entrance, and secure lockers - all accessible via keycard, the rooms were super clean and comfortable, and the shared spaces are lovely. On a rainy day, you can just chill out in the covered atrium area and read a book. My only issue was that it can be a little disruptive to have the toilet / shower room inside the dorm. Otherwise, near-perfect!

Shanti is my go-to place in Skopje. Nice and close to the station, super-friendly staff, and a real social vibe. Go here to meet other like-minded travellers. The curtains on the bunks are a bonus for a little privacy in the dorms.

ArkaBarka is an idyllic place to relax, on the water with a cup of coffee watching the ducks go by, yet still close enough to be in the centre of town within 20 minutes. Staff were friendly and helpful, and very accommodating. Facilities are basic, but enough for simple houseboat living. I would definitely stay here again.

City Hostel - Central Station, Stockholm, Sweden

25th Dec 2015

A little bit of a walk from central station, but this was a clean and comfortable hostel. Cooking facilities and nearby supermarkets were definitely a bonus, since the cost of eating out in Stockholm is pricey! At the same time, which is a relatively "quiet" hostel - and a "no drinking" hostel which might put off some potential backpackers.

A unique experience! The idea of staying at a renovated prison doesn't sound like the most enticing one, but this place is simply one of the best hostels that I have stayed at. The listing here also says check-in from 10am, but this is incorrect, and should be updated, as I when I first arrived, I was told that I had to come back at 1pm. I came back later, and they had given my booking to somebody else! That aside, staff were friendly and helpful, and offered me a private dorm instead, which was okay. Also, maybe I was here on a quiet weekend, but it wasn't the most socially active of hostels.

21st Feb 2015

Cheap(ish) and cheerful, Sisombath may not be the fanciest of hostels, and it is located a little way out of the main areas in LP, but it suited my needs, and the inclusion of breakfast was also a nice touch. Staff were friendly, though sometimes needed a bit of patience with communication (that doesn't bother me, but I know other people find it frustrating - if this is you, then maybe you should try learning to speak Lao! ;) ). The beds were a little on the harder side, but it was clean.

My backpacking days are mostly far behind me, but with my recent trip to Singapore, I wanted to stay somewhere central that was still affordable - which meant getting a hotel was out of the question! Five Stones is one of the nicer hostels that I've stayed in. Comfortable bunks, hot showers, decent wifi, free laundry (pay for soap), lockers (with locks on them!), 24 hour access, and plenty of public transport options. Staff were super friendly and helpful too! Would definitely stay here again

A cheap and cheerful hostel with plenty of character. It was also nice to have cable TV and a nice big bed if I wanted to retreat from the busy-ness outside. It's an old building, so there were the usual smells that come with that, but it generally felt clean and comfortable.

Staying at Lub d Silom was easy - staff were available to help me when I arrived, and within 5 minutes I had my keys and bed, ready to go and explore the city. Excellent budget option for staying in Adelaide. Yes, it's a hostel with a bar in it, and as such you can expect a younger backpacker crowd, and the kind of atmosphere that goes with it. So, if you can't handle that, then don't bother. That aside, I had no trouble getting in and out, and found the place to meet all of my basic needs. Furthermore, it was a nice quiet location that was still close to Rundle St. And staff were super-friendly and always happy to help out there they could.

Was initially put out because the location had been changed without informing me, and I was quite angry about this. However, now I feel bad even mentioning this, as the service, location, and atmosphere of the place were fantastic. Located on Nan Luogu Xiang, close to several bus routes and the airport express, it couldn't have been more convenient. Free wifi, and a beautiful rooftop garden. Lovely hot showers, and lockers in the dorms. I had an extremely comfortable stay.

Was a little hard to find the first time (they need to provide a better map!) but once I got there, I was happy. Staff was friendly and keen to give helpful advice. Egg, toast and filter coffee for breakfast was an added bonus, as were the soap, shampoo, towel and toothpaste. And a good location for seeing all the action in Hongdae. My only criticism was that the dorm felt a little cramped. However, if you're after good value for money and a comfortable bed to crash in, then this is the place!
