Discovery Hostel

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

One of the best! Fantastic location safe and very walkable to Lapa and Santa Theresa. Metro and buses half block away. Staff are super friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Great communal areas and quiet spaces (friendly people but no loud partiers when we were there). Only downside is occasional smokers in the open air common areas.

Tiger Tims Place

Budapest, Hungary

Tims has an great hostel set up for exploring Budapest and enjoying the camaraderie of travelers and staff. Tim and friends (when not sleeping off the night before) are the most friendly welcoming staff you will meet. Stayed in the spacious private ensuite apartment just down the street, which was ideal for a flashpacker on a little bigger budget as it was super quiet except when you wanted to join the other hostelers for a guided(!) night on the town. Location is perfect.

Apple Hostel

Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Seemed like one of the best guesthouses in the creepy but well-located Chungking Mansions. Staff are excellent and friendly Philipino ladies. Stayed in both the private single and twin and although the twin was much roomier, I slept much better in the dark and cosy single jail cell. Elevators involve a lineup and wait so you don't pop in and out of the rooms much, but not much hassle considering the great location. Highly recommended if you just need a cheap place to crash.

Location is handy with plentiful cheap taxis, but away from the noise and clutter. Rooms are spacious though walls a bit thin. Breakfast is just a bun and coffee and banana, but still great for the price. No need to spend more in cusco. The staff are very helpful and accommodating. Hot water was never a problem and the beds are good. Pillows were a bit hard and lumpy. Would definitely stay again.

Hostal de Turistas Chaska

Machu Picchu, Peru

Very accommodating staff. Hot water was iffy at times but good pressure. Great location, they meet you at train. A bit of noise from outside on Friday night but otherwise very quiet as it isn't near any of the discos that are popping up everywhere. I would definitely recommend two nights in AC at chaska. Also go to the hot springs after MP unless you are super fussy about hygiene.
