The Harbourside Backpackers is by far the best hostel I've stayed in in Sabah. The rooms are clean and bright. The hostel owner is very friendly and even showed me around Sandakan to look for a local dessert. It is located close to Central Market where cheap eats can be found in the morning and afternoon. My only gripe is the internet speed, which slows to a grinding halt at night when everyone gets back.
I had a very good stay at Akinabalu. The staff were very friendly and willing to help at any moment. Th only minor gripe I have is the lack of wifi reception in the rooms, and sometimes the computers do not have internet connection. Other than that, I'd be happy to stay at Akinabalu again.
I stayed in the 8-bed mixed dorm for a night. It was a good night. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The location couldn't be better. The only gripe I have is the Wifi range - there was good reception only in the lounge area on the ground floor. The receptionists did explain this was due to a technical fault.
I stayed in the 11 bed dorm for one night. This is the biggest and most well-run hostel I've even been. It is also very well designed with beautifully headlights embedded into the walls for every bed. Being on the top floor, there was an electronically operated sunroof which was really cool. The staff were professional and friendly. The Wifi really sucks though. Even in early morning it, when there's only a few people connected, it took forever to load simple pages.
I stayed in the 8 bed dorm for 4 nights. This hostel is beautifully designed and decorated. The terrace overlooking the medina is the best part. At night it has a lovely atmosphere that is really good for chatting and relaxing. The staff were friendly and helpful. THERE IS AIR CONDITIONING AS WELL! Only gripe I have is with the mattress, which was really soft for me and hard to sleep on. But apart from that I had a pleasant stay.
I stayed in the single bedroom. It was rather basic but does its job. It was quiet and I had a good night sleep.
I stayed in a 3 bed mixed dorm at the terrace and it was wonderful
Very conveniently located near the main transit point, Place R'cif. I stayed in the 7 bed dormitory which was fine although it's by the atrium and the heat from the building often passes into the dorm. Beautiful terrace for night talks. The owner, Ben was helpful and is a funny man. Pleasant stay overall.
I felt completely at home during my stay. Drinks and cereal were available throughout the day which was great. The location just couldn't be better - quietly tucked away on a side street yet has 2 metro lines nearby. Eric and Ana did their very best to provide information and make their guests felt at home. While the atmosphere encourages interaction, privacy is a slight problem. 1 suggestion would be to use normal curtains to create compartments within the 10-bed room when they are needed.
The sinks in the dorms are a little too small. The bathroom is always completely drenched after the morning rush.
Cheap and cheerful place to stay for visits to the Peak District especially the Roaches. Only bad thing is the coin-slot showers.
Stayed in 6 Beds Male Dorm for 1 night. Lockers provided in room but BRING YOUR OWN PADLOCK (£3 at the reception). Toilets and showering are good. NO FREE INTERNET. Very nice location (close walking distance to main stations and attractions).
