NapPark Hostel at Khao San

Bangkok, Thailand

A really lovely place. Gorgeous interior. Very close to Ethos and Mai Kaidee, two vegetarian/vegan restaurants. Walking distance to the temples but not close to any BTS or train station which wasn't great. There was a fine bus service so that was okay. Ladies napspace was beautiful, felt very luxurious. Appreciated the toiletries in the bathroom. Breakfast wasn't included which would have been better.

Spinner's Backpackers

Perth, Australia

Really great kitchen space! It was fun to cook there with everyone else. Rooms were fine, bathrooms were fine. A little walk to Williams St and the bus stations. Found a grab coffee shop called Little Wily's on Williams St too. Staff were really helpful and friendly. No free wifi and no breakfast included which wasn't ideal. But still an easy, friendly space with a nice homely feel.

YHA London Oxford Street

London, England

Extra charge for breakfast, extra charge for towels...these things should be standard with a hostel, surely. There's nothing wrong with the place's just another boring hostel. The location was really excellent though, close to great food options (including a vegan restaurant called Vitao), public transport, shops, galleries and museums. Staff were very very helpful and nice. Beds had a good set-up with lights and a shelf. Very warm blankets also!

Excellent location, close to good restaurants, sights, and accessible transport options. Really easy to find from the central train station. The rooms were small but not in a bad way, especially with the lovely terrace and common room downstairs. Nice maps inside and good information provided by the staff. Breakfast was very good and I loved the huge coffee mugs. I always think hostels should provide free soap though.

Jordan Tower Hostel

Amman, Jordan

A really lovely comfortable hostel. Comfortable beds in nice rooms, excellent breakfast spread, great helpful and friendly staff, good location downtown near restaurants, sweet shops and the citadel and amphitheatre. Bathrooms are small but it's really no problem. Nice common room with a good friendly atmosphere. One of the best hostels I've stayed at.

Sunshine Bedz KL

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Door rooms do not have locks, but do contain lockers. Not all rooms have windows so is very dark. Close to veg restaurants, expensive middle eastern restaurants. Close to public transport and easy walk anywhere you want to go. Bring your earplugs - walls are thin and people sit out in the corridor and talk and use computer all night. Breakfast of instant coffee and toast was basic, however great and very very cheap roti canai just around the corner.

PataPata Hostel

Valparaiso, Chile

Didn't have hot water once during my three day stay and the staff had a problem with my booking and so sent me away the first night, but they were really lovely people and gave me a take-away breakfast for an early bus ride on my last day. It's a really good hostel with a good communal area and a nice feel. Excellent location too, close to a vegetarian restaurant, minimarket and other essentials.

Portal del Sur

Buenos Aires, Argentina

A great hostel, run more like a professional hotel. Free classes every day (although double check with reception as times and locations change according to some unknown plan), close to Florida St, Avenida de Mayo and San Telmo and even a vegetarian restaurant. Kitchen is small and fridge could be updated, plus one shower constantly leaker which seemed pretty poor but didnt impact my stay at all. Lovely view from the roof. ´Breakfast was bread and two medialunes - surprisingly no dulce de leche!

Hostal de Granados

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Great location right in San Telmo close to many nice places to eat and wander around. Very safe, good lockers in the room and on all the room doors. Staff were friendly and sweet, didn't really offer much in the way of advice but had all the usual flyers and vouchers there. Not really a place to meet other travellers but great if you want to hang out and explore the place on your own. Simple breakfast but with the location that was hardly a problem!

El Viajero - Hostel & Suites

Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Lovely helpful staff. Great location just near the old city centre and very close to bus and port terminal. Great breakfast, nicely equipped kitchen. Rooms were cleaned every day. I had a great ensuite in the female dorm room which was simple and small but quite sufficient. Some travellers had a wild party until very late one night and staff didn't ask them to keep it down which was a bit frustrating.

Boulevard Sarandi Hostel

Montevideo, Uruguay

Lovely large female dorm room with nice windows. The building itself is really nice to stay in, and close to everything you would want to visit in the city (including little empanada place on a corner). I emailed them before I left to organise horse-riding and, despite continually telling me they could do it, they weren't able to do it when I arrived and then appeared to forget my request every time I reminded them. They also smoked in the common room overnight. Good breakfast.

Books Hostel

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Great place to meet other travellers. Good common area. Gets loud at night in the bedrooms and as the hostel is close to a main road, noisy from that too! Close to many cheap places to eat and drink and close to public transport. Some staff are more helpful then others. Staff are great fun, easy-going and like to party but had friends over continually which made the place feel like a drop-in place sometimes. EXCELLENT breakfast. Do half your stay here and half somewhere fresher like Ipanema!

Great rooms, kitchen and common room, housekeeping every day, use of the pool and phone plus a good location to get around. Staff didn't provide any assistance with activities or public transport which was a bit of a shame, but they did their basic job well and don't tout themselves as tour guides anyway. Highly recommended though, a nice place.
