Exploring the Hungarian capital

Divided into two distinctive districts by the River Danube, Budapest is one of Eastern Europe’s most beautiful cities. To the west of the river lies the Buda district, distinguished by its hilly landscape, and to the east lies Pest, a flatter and more commercial district. Explore both sides to find museums, cafés and a vibrant nightlife.

Day 1 - Budapest

Explore the Buda side

Budapest is divided into two sections by the River Danube. The Buda, which is east of the river, and the Pest, which is west of the river. Begin your trip in the Buda side on Castle Hill. Visit St Mathias Church before savouring the views from Fishermen’s Bastion (right).

Afterwards explore the rest of the hill, walking around the grounds of the Royal Palace before going into one of the museums it houses.

End the day off in one of the bars/cafés around Liszt Square. Café Vian is one of the coolest bars on it and does great food too.

Take the free tour of Parliament at 10pm. Afterwards visit St Stephen’s Basilica and then grab a quick sandwich from Durcin on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utca..

After lunch take a leisurely stroll up Andrassy Avenue passing by the State Opera House among other buildings before ending up in Heroes Square (right), the city’s grandest square.

Also on Andrassy Avenue, Morrison’s Music Bar is one of the city’s most popular after dark haunts and worth a visit.

Day 3 - Budapest

Fancy a dip?

Explore the heart of the city centre on Vaci Utca. The city’s main shopping street is the perfect place to inflict damage to your flexible friend but a pleasant place to stroll along if you’re not in the market for some new clothes. It ends at the Great Market Hall which is a great place for lunch.

Walk back towards the centre of the city along the Danube, enjoying views of Gellert Hill, the Royal Palace and Mathias Church.

In the evening go for a dip in one of the city’s baths. We recommend the Szechenyi Baths (right) before ending the night in Becketts Irish Bar (Bajcsy Zsilinszky Utca).
