Tour Itinerary
Join one of the most popular Italian event, the well known Palio horse race of Siena in this one day tour.
Your private coach departs at 12pm bound for the historic city of Siena, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. During the journey you will be given further information about the race and Siena itself, including maps.
Upon arrival in Siena you will make your way to the Piazza del Campo for the magnificent pre-race pageant, the Corteo Storico. The race itself, in which the jockeys ride bareback, involves circling the piazza, on which a thick layer of dirt has been laid, three times and usually lasts no more than 90 seconds. It is not uncommon for a few of the jockeys to be thrown off their horses while making the treacherous turns in the piazza and indeed it is not unusual to see unmounted horses finishing the race without their jockeys. The Palio in fact is won by the horse who represents his contrada, and not by the jockeys.
After the race you will have the opportunity to continue celebrating into the evening, long after all public transportation back to Florence has finished! Departure time from Siena is 11pm and you should be back in Florence by midnight.
