The Christian church built on top of the mountain is considered the most valuable church in the whole region, due to the fact that it contains mosaic walls and a superb mosaic floor. On a clear day you can see Jerusalem, Jericho, and the Dead Sea from the top of the mountain, and then continue to Madaba, "The City of Mosaics". In many respects Madaba is a typical East Bank town yet underneath almost every house lays a fine Byzantine mosaic. Many of these mosaics have been excavated and are on display in the town's museum, but it is estimated that many more lay hidden waiting to be discovered. Saint George's church has the oldest preserved ancient mosaic map of the holy lands (Jerusalem, Jordan, and Lower Egypt). The next destination will be: Kerak, where we will visit Kerak castle, which is distinguished by its fine crusader castle built in the 12th century on the remains of earlier citadels, which date back to Nabatean times. The castle in itself is more imposing than beautiful, though it is all the more impressive as an example of the Crusaders' architectural military genius. Each stronghold was built to be a day's journey from its neighbor and at night a beacon was lit at each castle to signal to Jerusalem that it was safe. As we will see, Kerak is superbly situated on the King's Highway and historically controlled all traffic from north and south and prospered by the imposition of road toll and taxes, after that drive to Petra for dinner and overnight. We enter the site by navigating the narrow kilometer long Siq, or canyon and our guided exploration of the site will take in many of the over 800 individual monuments, including buildings, tombs, baths, funerary halls, temples, arched gateways, and colonnaded streets, that were mostly carved from the kaleidoscopic sandstone by the inhabitants centuries ago.
