Tour Itinerary

Himalayan Festival Tour/Trekking in Upper Dolpo area, Nepal

Before the departure of the caravans to the south, the villagers ask their Lama to consult the astrological tables to ascertain the most auspicious date. This year the caravans could not leave before the tenth Tibetan Month (November) and not on a Saturday, Sunday or Tuesday, which are considered inauspicious days for community activities.

Dolpo, one of the highest inhabited plateaus in the world, is a Tibetan culture area of 2100 square miles inside Nepal's northwestern frontier with Tibet. Its 4500 Tibetan speaking inhabitants live in 35 scattered villages and monasteries that lie at altitude of 11000 - 15000 feet.

Dolpo is part of Nepal, but in race, culture and language, its people, the Dolpo-pa are no different from their northern neighbors. All are descendants of Tibetans who migrated to the legendary Be-youl, the hidden land before the tenth century.
