Putukusi Trek
This tour that takes you up to the Putukusi Mountain, from where you can have a magnificent panoramic view of the site of Machu Picchu, from the Gate of the Sun on the left to the Huayna Picchu on the right. You stand high above the ruins on the opposite side of the Urubamba River. The ancient inca-trail, used to control and guard the access to the ruins, takes about 5 to 6 hours and is recommended only for persons in excellent health condition.
The excursion starts in Aguas Calientes, along a steep way, with many stair-ways (the longest one has 178 steps carved into the rock) and ramps, which have been restored recently.
One is surrounded by lush vegetation and upon arrival to the top of the mountain, the magnificent view is impressive and compensates the great effort of climbing to the top. Climb a steep rustic wooden stairway nailed to the rock with an almost vertical ascent amid cloud forest vegetation, an adventure not suitable for those who fear highs.
The view of the mountain is magnificent, crowned with a panoramic view of the Machu Picchu remains and at your feet the village of Aguas Calientes and the Mandor Valley.
