3 DAY ITINERARY

DAY 1 : Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo via Route 62

Included:

- Dinner (Ostrich BBQ)

- Wine tasting on R62

- Cango Wildlife Ranch (guided tour)

Our tour takes us away from the mother city and the lush, green landscapes of the winelands toward the drier, arid landscapes of the Klein Karoo - its diversity of vegetation and scenery making it a destination in itself.

Also home to the longest wine-route in South Africa, Route 62, we stop to enjoy the 'nectar of the gods' with a mind tingling wine tasting before heading on toward the majestic Swartberg Mountain Range and the Ostrich Capitol, Oudtshoorn.

Our weekend getaway starts with a visit to one of the world's largest cheetah breeding centres, the Cango Wildlife Ranch. Situated on the outskirts of Oudtshoorn, the Ranch offers a unique guided tour through their sanctuary with a host of endangered animal and bird species that include cheetah, tigers, meerkat to name but a few. The Ranch also offers their 'Wild Encounters', an awesome opportunity to interact with cheetah and tiger or for the brave, Croc cage diving! (encounters are optional extras, see overview for pricing).

After a short drive we arrive at Backpackers Paradise, our home for the next 2 nights and arguably one of the best Backpackers in South Africa. Enjoy a traditional ostrich BBQ, (fabulous veg option available) and then relax around the campfire or challenge the crew to a game of pool! With their good internet facilities, satellite television, splash pool and fabulous chill out areas, this is paradise!

We pop out just after dark for a fascinating look at Africa's magnificent night sky…the rural spaces of the area providing the perfect vantage point and with the only light coming from the constellations above, shooting stars guaranteed!...

DAY 2 : Swartberg Pass, Cango Caves and the Klein Karoo

Included:

- Breakfast (ostrich egg in season) & Dinner

- Cycling down the Swartberg Pass on a mountain bike.

- Cango Caves (adventure or standard tour)

- Afternoon tour of the area to the waterfalls and ancient rock formations)

Our day starts with a scrumptious cooked breakfast (ostrich egg in season) before departing for a spectacular drive up the Swartberg Pass (1500mtrs above sea-level) for an awe-inspiring view of the diverse landscapes below and the opportunity to cycle down this 100year old pass. Mountain bikes are provided and one has ample time to cycle down, stopping for photos of the awesome beauty below.

Heading on to a World Heritage Site, the Cango Caves, its wonderland of carved limestone formations and massive caverns dating back millions of years, making it the perfect stop for our adventure. One has the option of the more relaxed standard tour, taking one through the vast caverns or for the more daring, the adventure tour offers the unique chance to explore the maze of tunnels that lay deep beneath!

After a refreshing lunch stop we head on an afternoon adventure to visit the neighbouring area - with its history and culture, the Klein Karoo offers a step back in time for all - we visit the waterfalls in Meiringspoort, with its ancient rock formations, carved through time and have the opportunity to learn more about these diverse lands and the tribes that roamed here before.

Our evening sees a short stroll through the historic town of Oudtshoorn, lined with its sandstone homes and churches en-route to dinner at a fabulous restaurant in town.

DAY 3 : Ostrich farm & riding, Natural Hot Springs & R62

Included:

- Breakfast

- Safari Ostrich Farm (guided tour and chance to ride)

- Swim at Warmwaterberg Natural Hot springs

A trip to Oudtshoorn would not be complete without close up of an ostrich!

Safari Ostrich Show Farm is an operating farm where visitors will see large flocks of ostriches at different stages of development in the surrounding fields. Visitors are assured of personal attention and upon their arrival are greeted by one of our multi-lingual guides who will, during the course of the tour explain every aspect of ostrich farming, from breeding to rearing. The tour starts in the breeding camp, with a nest of ostrich eggs, where the first stage of the ostrich life cycle is explained. Visitors will get the opportunity to test the strength of the eggs by standing on them - a great photo opportunity. During the breeding season visitors get to see ostrich eggs hatching in the incubator rooms. Every tour ends with an "Ostrich Derby" where local jockeys display their riding skills. A highly entertaining and educational tour is guaranteed and those who are brave enough can even try their hand at riding one.

With a feather in hand we head away from Oudthsoorn on Route 62 and stop at Warmwaterberg for a relaxing swim in their Natural Hot Springs and enough time for lunch before our last stretch to Cape Town and the setting sun!
