Tour Itinerary

Popular with history buffs and archaeologists, world travelers and school groups, the former capital of Siam was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. During the 15th century, Ayutthaya became the capital of Siam, and the country (now Thailand) was ruled from there for 417 years. It was a very wealthy city, built at the confluence of the Chao Phraya, Pasak, and Lopburi rivers, and 16th-century visitors from Portugal, France, Holland, and England were amazed at its size and grandeur.

In 1767, after two years of elephant-back warfare with Burma, Ayutthaya was destroyed and abandoned. The capital moved downriver to Thonburi and later across to Bangkok, where it remains. Today, centuries-old temples, palaces, monasteries, canals, and monuments survive as ruins, giving you a hint of the magnificent ancient history of the Thai culture.
