On route to our destination of Lamphun, or Haripunchai as it once was called , we ride through quiet country roads and farmland and experience the Lanna way of life. Our ride takes us further into abundant orchards with a plethora of seasonal fruit including longans, lychee, mangos, bananas, guavas, coconuts, jackfruit, durian, dragon fruit, among many others. As we pass through small rural villages and crisscross the tranquil Ping river we encounter smiling faces and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We'll take the time to stop often to sample the local delights on offer at road-side stalls and markets.

Once we reach historical Lamphun, once an important stop on the trade routes from China and Laos in the north to the Chao Praya River in the south, we'll cycle around the ancient city walls and stop to see the oldest and holiest stupa in Thailand built in 1044, Wat Phra That Haripunchai. This region was originally ruled by legendary Mon Queen Chama Thewi and precedes Chiang Mai by 700 years. Eventually overcome by King Meng Rai in the 13th century, Lamphun remained a stronghold with independence of culture and influence. For lunch we'll stop at a riverside restaurant and enjoy local Lanna cuisine. We'll also take time out to explore Lamphun's lively markets where the fresh fruit from the orchards we rode through will be on offer.

This idyllic town is the origin of the kingdom of a million rice fields and of great heritage significance!

What do we see?

Beautiful river side views, rich fertile farm land with a plethora of seasonal fruit and vegetable crops including Lamyai, Lycee, mango, bananas, guavas and coconuts. jackfruit, durian and dragon fruit. Tomotoes, aubergine, shallots, and the list goes on. See some of Northern Thailand's tallest stupas and experience the peaceful beauty of the Buddhist culture at Wat Phra That Haripunchai where we are surrounded by the chanting of monks and the music of traditional instruments. Country roads bustling with life but not traffic.

What is the riding like?

This a very gentle 35km ride on peaceful country back roads, passing through fruit and vegetable plantations and along riverside trails. We stop often at points of interest and scenic spots. This ride is suitable for anyone as we travel at a leisurely and relaxed pace.

A tasty, healthy lunch of delicious Lanna cuisine in a riverside restaurant and an opportunity to explore more of Lamphun's lively markets.

Of course, water, soft drinks and snacks are all included all day and SpiceRoads supplies a mountain bike and helmet. The trip is fully supported by our air conditioned minibus, fully equipped with a two-way radio.
