    My first holiday was...

Squeezed into the back of an Austin Maxi car with my brothers and sisters and brought to a campsite in France for a family holiday.

My most memorable travel experience so far is...

The best ones are the most difficult to remember in detail, if you know what I mean, but taking a few months off work to travel the world was great and something I’d highly recommend. The view from Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio, visiting the tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the nightlife of the Baltic States also come to mind.

    My funniest travel memory is...

My mate sitting on the lap of a clearly inebriated elderly Russian hostel landlady and dancing with her in an effort persuade her to find us some spare beds in her full hostel. He succeeded thanks to a lot of Irish charm. But if you want to avoid that, it’s best booking on Hostelworld in advance!

    My top travel destination:

Hmmm, this is too difficult. By country – France has it all. By city, Paris is fantastic (you can never get bored visiting) but I adored Jerusalem. So much history to soak up. A veritable melting pot of cultures, religions, sights and smells.

    My top travel tip is...

Never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience. And if it hurts, you know what? It's probably worth it. Ok, so I might've stolen this from Leonardo DiCaprio character in 'The Beach'. But I think what he means is “get in with the locals”, so I’d go with that.

How do I think travel has changed most over the last 10 years...

Internet, internet, internet! It has opened up destinations for people, while low cost airlines have made them affordable. People are more independent, willing to do their own research and book online. Sites like ours have become the new ‘online’ travel agents for young and older alike.

    Top travel necessity...

2 pairs of swimming togs in case one is nicked when you leave it out to dry while you are in the local beach bar in Brazil! Travel insurance and earplugs would be up there too!!

Next destination on my travel wish list is...

It’s a long list but Vietnam is looking like it may be next.

Why I like working for Hostelworld.com...

It gives me a great excuse to spend my time on travel websites!!
