With February 14th almost upon us, we take a look at some of the most popular Valentine’s Day destinations around the world. Whether you’re taken or single, we’ve got some great picks for enjoyable Valentine getaways.
1. Paris, France
Almost universally seen as one of the most romantic places on the planet, Paris is a great choice for a Valentine’s Day trip. Stroll hand in hand along the banks of the River Seine or head to Montmartre where you’ll find ‘Le mur des je t’aime’ or the ‘I Love You wall’, a work of art covered with over 310 romantic declarations in 250 different languages.
Then there's the world-famous Eiffel Tower, which is especially striking at night. What could be more romantic than heading to the top with that special someone and looking down at Paris spread out below? As you can see, Paris really doesn’t need any help being romantic all on its own; however, there are plenty of activities put on especially for the loved-up on Valentine’s Day, ranging from film screenings to cooking classes for two.
2. New York, USA
From An Affair to Remember to When Harry Met Sally, New York City has provided the backdrop to some of the most memorable romantic movies of all time. Take a visit to the Big Apple and you can take a stroll through Central Park with your sweetheart or head to the top of the Empire State Building for incredible views of the city.
You’ll find plenty of Valentine’s Day-themed events taking place throughout NYC’s five boroughs on the 14th, including restaurant specials, romantic live music and plenty more.
3. Venice, Italy
Ask most people what they think the most romantic activities in the world are and they’re bound to bring up gondola rides along Venice’s numerous canals. Not just a good opportunity to snuggle up to your significant other, these gondola rides are a great way to see more of this unique city.
After a day spent looking around this picturesque city, head to one of the many restaurants in Venice serving mouth-watering Italian cuisine for an intimate meal for two.
4. Cape Town, South Africa
With its spectacular scenery and interesting attractions, Cape Town is a great choice for a Valentine’s Day getaway. If you’re looking to be dazzled, head up to the top of Table Mountain in time for sunset and neither you nor your partner will be disappointed.
On top of that, many of the top restaurants in Cape Town are offering great Valentine’s Day deals for you to sample.
5. Koh Tao
For somewhere a little more off the beaten path, check out the Thai island of Koh Tao (Turtle Island). Along with your Valentine, you can explore this beautiful spot which is a particularly popular diving destination.
In the waters off the island, you’ll come across a colourful collection of marine life, while the white sandy beaches offer plenty of opportunities for a romantic sunset stroll.
6. Rio de Janeiro
They don’t actually celebrate this particular holiday in Brazil until ‘Dia dos Namorados’ in June so Rio is a great place to be if you’re going stag this Valentine’s Day. You’ll find plenty of things to do in Rio, a city overlooked by the Christ the Redeemer statue sitting atop of Corcovado mountain.
Some of the top attractions in Rio de Janeiro include the natural beauty of the Sugarloaf mountain and the city’s legendary nightlife. That isn’t to say there’s no romance to be found in Rio on February 14th. In fact, if you’re looking for a Valentine of your very own, check out the Brazilian beauties (of both the male and female variety) enjoying the summer sun down on Rio’s famous beaches, Copacabana and Ipanema.
