1. Use Auckland's free bus service called the 'City Circuit'
When you're in Auckland make sure to make use of the city's free bus service called the 'City Circuit'. It operates seven days a week between 8am and 6pm. There are stops dotted throughout the city centre at places such as the city's famous Skytower and Queen St, and they leave every ten minutes.
2. Eat in 'BYO restaurants
When you're looking for somewhere to eat out in Auckland, keep an eye out for restaurants which are 'BYO'. This stands for 'bring your own', meaning you can bring your own wine. One which is extremely good value is Blue Caspian on the city's famous K Road, and this is just many on that road.
3. Chill out in one of its parks
This is a great way to while away a few hours without spending a cent. Two to keep an eye out for are The Domain just outisde the city centre which is the biggest and best known park, and Albert Park which is in the heart of Downtown Auckland.
4. Check out the Victoria Park Market
Take a few hours to check out the goods on offer at the Victoria Park Market where you will find lots of cheap clothes and a whole lot more.
5. Visit the free museums and galleries
Check out one of Auckland's free museums or art galleries. The best known are the Auckland Art Gallery on the corner of Wellesley and Lorne Sts in Downtown Auckland which houses over 14,000 artworks, and the Auckland War Memorial Museum in the Domain which is divided into three sections – the ground floor which focuses on Pacific People, the first floor which is about natural history, and the top floor which is documents the role New Zealand has played in various wars. But please note that they do suggest you make a donation..
And finally...
Another great way to save money in Auckland is by staying hostels, not hotels, such as YHA Auckland International which offers both privates and dorms and is smack back in the middle of Downtown Auckland.
