Hong Kong is one of the world’s original melting pots. You can feel the energy as soon as you arrive, but take a short trip outside the city and you’re met with an endless landscape of lush green forests.

As for where to stay, there are two main options: Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.

Kowloon has a surprising amount of hostels packed into the area around Tsim Sha Tsui, including Chungking Mansions, where you can find a wide variety of cheap hostels for your stay. Nathan Road also heads north from Tsim Sha Tsui, which is full of jewellery, electronics and tailoring shops.

The other option is Hong Kong Island. You’ll be close to vibrant areas like Wan Chai, packed with neon-lit signs, bars and cheap restaurants, plus some of Hong Kong’s largest department stores.

Hostels in Hong Kong swing between two extremes. You can find budget options in tower blocks that used to be apartments, or slick modern offerings that would rival some of the cheaper hotels in the city. Hotels are known for being expensive in Hong Kong, but hostels give you the perfect way to stay in the city centre, within easy reach of all the coolest areas, without blowing your budget.

There are a few things to do that should be on everyone’s list. Take the tram to the top of Victoria Peak and soak in the Hong Kong skyline, or take a trip out to Lantau Island and marvel at the 202-tonne bronze statue that is the Big Buddha. If you’re not feeling that adventurous, stick to the city centre and enjoy some of the best dim sum in the world topped off with a bit of window shopping.

Hong Kong is made up of many layers. There’s shopping and food, but dig a bit deeper and you can find historic temples, amazing hiking trails and serene green spaces. Here are a few more hot spots in Hong Kong for you to explore, but make sure to get out of your hostel and visit the outer islands.
