About Lombok

Bali's quieter sibling, the island of Lombok has a rustic feel as well as near-deserted beaches, secret surf spots and the second highest volcano in Indonesia. If you're looking for a quintessential tropical paradise, it's an easy hop to the car-free Gili isles – Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno – just off its coast. Choose this glittering Asian destination for sunbathing on white sands, as well as diving and snorkelling in crystal-clear water.

Lombok hostels include an eco-friendly Indonesian Borneo longhouse right on the beach and private wooden huts with rustic straw roofs. Pick from places with plenty of common areas – from terraces and bars to kitchens and yoga studios. If you're into riding the waves or want to learn, check out hostels that rent boards and have views of the sea so you can keep an eye on the surf from your bunk. There's even a Lombok hostel with a skate bowl!

Kuta village has a memorable setting – all powdery sand and bright blue waters – as well as some of Lombok's best surf. Senggigi, meanwhile, is the main traveller strip in Lombok with plenty of westernised bars and restaurants. Tanjung is home to a natural harbour, with traditional Indonesian boats mixed in among the sailing crafts. Mataram, the island's capital, is the place to soak up the country's culture – it has lots of warungs (Indonesian eateries) as well as gleaming mosques.

When on Lombok, adventurous types might want to climb Mount Rinjani, a volcano reaching heights of 3,726 metres. Many travellers scale it on a three-day tour. Around the base, you can also take on gentler treks towards waterfalls. Underwater exploration's also popular on Lombok, with around 25 dives sites nearby where you'll have opportunities to spot white-tip sharks and manta rays in their natural habitats. There are plenty of surfing beaches too, and you'll find one to match your abilities from spots for beginners to places that are ideal if you're more experienced.

You can get around Lombok on buses and bemo (minibuses), with buses leaving from main stations like Mandalika Terminal (3km east of Mataram). You can hail bemos out on the road. Cars and motorbikes are available for hire and you can also use metered taxis or order a moto taxi for short trips using the app Go-Jek (in Mataram and west Lombok). Lombok International Airport can be reached by shuttle bus from popular areas on the island like Mataram and Senggigi.
