About Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo is a place for taking life at a slower pace. This former sleepy fishing village has become a popular resort on Costa Rica's small Caribbean coast, and it attracts surfers and nature lovers from far and wide. Most people show up for the waves and white sands and stay for the bamboo hut bars with reggae playing into the early hours. When the sun goes down, the guaro, a locally made sugar cane liquor, comes out to kick-start the night.

Feel at one with nature in a Puerto Viejo hostel by the forest, where you can hear the sound of creatures stirring at night. You can also stay in an eco hostel, designed to run sustainably within the natural environment. Meet fellow travellers over a barbecue, in a common space or in a hammock zone, depending on which hostel you choose. Some Puerto Viejo hostels have female-only dorms or private rooms, and many will give you free breakfasts too.

Puerto Viejo itself is a small town, but it's widely known for its party vibe. Stick around town to dance from sundown to sunup, and to discover the local cuisine from street food vendors and at stylish restaurants. For something a little calmer, head to the neighbourhoods of Punta Uva, Chiquita or Playa Negra. Cocles is another area along the coast, and the beach there, Playa Cocles, is a great place for surfers who prefer a slightly gentler wave than those at the famous Salsa Brava.

Puerto Viejo's main attraction is its beaches. Playa Negra is a striking black-sand beach with waves gentle enough for swimming. If you prefer your paddling to take place on top of a surfboard, Salsa Brava beach is the place to be. Get in touch with nature at Playa Chiquita, where you can get eye to eye with a blue parrotfish when you snorkel by the reef. Celebrate Costa Rica's biodiversity with a visit to the protected Cahuita National Park or Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Here, you can see the endangered Sangrillo tree and several species of brightly coloured birds.

If you're arriving by plane, Limón International Airport is the closest to Puerto Viejo. You can catch a shuttle bus to take you the hour's drive along the coast. When you arrive, renting a bike is a good choice for making your way between the different beaches and towns. Buses make the trips everyday too, or you can hop in a taxi.
