About Siquijor Island near Bohol

Siquijor in the Philippines has a long association with mysticism. Today it's a hotspot for traditional healers, and you can buy "potions" from almost any souvenir stall on the island. It's also home to magical waterfalls and white-sand beaches where tall palms lean out over the waves, and in quieter parts of the island you'll see mangrove trees and wooden fishing boats pulled up onto the shore. Spanish colonists called it "Isla del Fuego" (Island of Fire) thanks to the fireflies that light up its night sky.

Most Siquijor hostels are based in San Juan town. You can stay in cosy accommodation with an outdoor swimming pool or pick rooms overlooking the ocean. Free Wi-Fi comes as standard, and you'll find on-site bars or restaurants where you can chill out in the evenings. Most hostels in Siquijor have ceiling fans to keep you cool, and several sit among scenic nature – think tumbling rocky cliffs and flower gardens. Choose a Siquijor hostel with personal lockers for extra peace of mind.

Most visitors to Siquijor head to San Juan, where you'll find the island's liveliest restaurants, hostels and bars. This part of Siquijor faces west, so it's a popular spot to watch sunsets. Lazi is on the southern shore, where you'll find waterfalls, historic colonial churches and a gigantic 400-year-old tree. You can dive with tropical fish and coral on nearby Apo Island, or stay on Siquijor and rent a mask and snorkel at Tubod Marine Sanctuary.

Tropical Siquijor has lots to offer nature-lovers. Soar over Cambugahay Falls on a rope swing, or explore the verdant pathways of Molave Forest. Head to Salagdoong Beach for cliff jumping, swimming and snorkelling in clear ocean waves. The island's highest peak is Mount Bandilaan, where you can follow the hiking trails through lush jungle. Adventure-seekers can try exploring Cantabon Cave, full of dramatic rock formations. Capilay Spring Park in San Juan is a great place to get a feel for local life. This popular picnicking and swimming spot attracts Filipino families and travellers alike.

Dumaguete Airport is the closest to Siquijor. From here you can take a tricycle to Dumaguete Port (30 minutes) and a ferry to Siquijor (around 1.5 hours). Ferries also run direct from Tagbilaran in Bohol (1.5 hours). On Siquijor, it's easy to get around by catching tricycles, or you can rent a motorbike to explore more independently. Be extra eco-friendly by hiring a pedal-powered bicycle from your hostel or a local company.
