That era left its mark on \u0160irok Sokak, the long pedestrian street of neoclassical townhouses in soft colours that is still the centre of city life.\r\n\r\nThe Ottoman bazaar, with its covered market and mosques, is on the other side of the river. On the edge of town are the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis, founded by Philip II of Macedon, with some of the finest mosaics in the region. Above it all is Mount Pelister, the country's oldest national park.\r\n\r\nBitola is relaxed, cultured and much less visited than Ohrid, an hour and a quarter away.
