eighteenth-century wall built by King Erekle II with twenty-three towers along it. You can walk long stretches of the rampart and climb several towers, free.\r\n\r\nBelow it spreads the Alazani valley, flat and green and full of vines, with the Greater Caucasus rising on the far side. On a clear day the view from the town wall is one of the best in the country.\r\n\r\nThe town itself was restored heavily in the 2000s and is prettier than it is authentic \u2014 pastel buildings, carved balconies, a neat central square. Some people find it a little staged. It is still a good place to spend two days.\r\n\r\nThe wine is the real reason to come. Georgia has been making wine for about eight thousand years in qvevri, clay vessels buried in the ground, and the method is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
